Treasury is one of the more specialized finance functions, and its remote market reflects both the discipline's technical depth and the organizational reality that treasury operations at complex companies are too consequential to be managed without clear accountability structures regardless of location. For senior treasury professionals with 10 or more years of experience, the remote market has opened meaningfully, driven by the adoption of cloud-based treasury management systems, the global nature of treasury operations at international companies, and the recognition that treasury strategy, cash forecasting, and financial risk management are analytical and advisory functions that can be performed effectively from any location with secure system access. The challenge is that treasury is a function where the trust dimension of employment is particularly significant, and senior professionals need to have built a demonstrated track record that makes remote engagement credible.
Treasury at the treasury analyst and treasury manager level is moderately competitive. The Group Treasurer, Head of Treasury, and VP Treasury level is genuinely scarce. The specific combination required — deep liquidity management expertise, financial risk management capability (FX hedging, interest rate risk, commodity risk where relevant), banking relationship management at the senior level, and the organizational influence to shape capital structure decisions — is not widely available. Companies with complex international treasury operations, including significant multi-currency cash pools, hedging programs, and intercompany financing structures, consistently find the qualified senior pool smaller than their needs. Fintech companies with novel treasury challenges, including cryptocurrency treasury management and cross-border payment infrastructure, have created an additional layer of demand for treasury professionals with digital asset and payment systems expertise.
Remote treasury hiring is strongest at the Senior Treasury Manager, Group Treasurer, and Head of Treasury level at companies with centralized treasury functions and distributed operations. Treasury operations at companies with global cash pools are inherently distributed because the cash positions being managed are in bank accounts across multiple jurisdictions, and the treasury management systems (Kyriba, SAP TRM, FIS Quantum, or equivalent) are cloud-based platforms accessible from any location with appropriate security controls. The treasury function at technology companies is particularly remote-accessible because the companies themselves have distributed operations and are comfortable with the remote working model. Corporate treasury at large traditional financial institutions remains more in-office oriented, though even there the COVID period demonstrated the function's remote compatibility.
TMS platform depth is the first filter. Companies screening for senior treasury professionals expect specific treasury management system experience, and candidates who describe their treasury operations in generic terms without naming the TMS platforms they have used and governed are frequently deprioritized. Kyriba, SAP TRM, FIS Quantum, and GTreasury are the most commonly screened platforms. A second filter is financial risk management ownership: companies distinguish between treasury professionals who have executed hedging transactions within an established risk policy and those who have designed the hedging strategy, set the risk appetite, and owned the hedge accounting documentation under IFRS 9 or ASC 815. The latter is the senior-level credential that companies hiring Group Treasurers and VP Treasury are screening for. Third, banking relationship management depth matters at the senior level: treasurers who have managed multi-bank relationship panels, negotiated credit facilities, and overseen bank fee analysis and RFP processes are distinguished from those whose banking relationships have been primarily operational.
