If your remote search felt harder in September, the data agrees with you, and the reason is not only that there were fewer jobs. Only 4% of new remote jobs on Jobgether were open worldwide, and each one drew an estimated 8.8 times the average number of applications. We published the full numbers in the Jobgether Remote Work Index for September 2026, built from the remote jobs and applications that move through our platform.
It came in a slower month, with new remote postings down 15.8% from August. A smaller market is not a closed one, though. Some roles and skills grew while the total shrank, AI requirements spread into functions far from engineering, and competition piled up in the few places most candidates apply to first. This breakdown covers what changed and what it means for where an experienced professional should spend limited application time.
Where can you actually work from in a remote job?
Mostly from one country. In September 2026, 49.3% of new remote postings on Jobgether were open in a single country and 35.7% only in certain US states, while 4.0% were open worldwide, down from 4.8% in August.
Worldwide postings fell 29.8% a day. Some employers' hiring software marks every job as open anywhere, and when those are left out the Index estimates that only 2.1% of new postings are truly open worldwide. Region-wide roles moved the other way, growing from 3.8% to 4.4% of new postings.
A role labeled remote can still require residence in one country or state. Checking location requirements before anything else keeps applications focused on roles you can actually take.
Why are the most attractive remote roles the hardest to land?
Because nearly everyone applies to them. A new worldwide posting drew an estimated 8.8 times the average applications on Jobgether in September, a region-wide posting 3.7 times and a single-country posting 0.66 times.
Competition also varies sharply by field. Software engineering (2.26 times the average) and administration and executive support (2.22 times) drew the most applications per posting, while banking, investment and insurance (0.20 times) and healthcare and life sciences (0.19 times) drew the fewest. These are estimates based on applications made through Jobgether, so they describe who applies on our platform rather than the whole market.
The practical reading is that the widest postings are long shots. A role open in your own country or region gives an application a far better chance of being read.
Is remote hiring slowing down in 2026?
Yes. New remote job postings on Jobgether fell 15.8% a day in September 2026, from 3,555 a day in August to 2,995. Among employers that posted in both months, new postings fell an estimated 10.5%, so the slowdown is not explained by a change in which job sources were counted.
The drop shows up under every counting method in the Index, from distinct vacancies (down 15.5%) to a broader duplicate rule (down 17.5%). At the same time, the total number of open remote roles listed on Jobgether rose from 130,258 on August 11 to 155,921 on September 8. A busy-looking job board and a slowing flow of new roles can both be true, and the flow of new roles is the better signal of where demand is heading.
Which remote jobs grew while the market fell?
B2B sales was the only role group with a clear rise. New B2B sales postings on Jobgether rose 13.8% a day in September, from 3,677 in August to 4,051, while all new remote postings fell 15.8%.
The growth is not one company on a hiring spree. Without the group's largest employer, B2B sales still grew 8.2%. Business operations fell 5.4%, about a third of the market's decline, and by industry financial services held up best with a 10.9% drop while professional and business services fell 32.1%.
For experienced commercial leaders, that is a clear signal about where demand is holding. It also means more people with sales backgrounds will compete for the same openings, so a profile has to make revenue outcomes obvious in the first few lines.
Which skills are remote employers asking for more?
Data analysis, risk management and project management gained the most ground in September. Postings asking for data analysis came in 725 above what the market's drop would predict, with risk management 617 above and project management 572 above.
Postings that asked for data analysis fell only 8.6% a day, against 15.8% for the whole market. Process improvement, change management and regulatory compliance also beat the trend. Customer support and CRM software lost the most ground, landing 378 and 308 postings below the market trend.
The common thread is measurability. When budgets tighten, employers favor work they can quantify and defend, and these skills sit across functions rather than inside one department. An operations director with a strong analysis record or a program leader who manages regulatory risk only benefits if that evidence appears near the top of the CV.
How is AI changing remote jobs outside tech?
AI requirements have spread well beyond engineering. In September 2026, 10.1% of new remote postings on Jobgether asked for at least one AI skill, and of those with a known role family, 58.8% sat outside data and software engineering.
The share rose fastest in marketing and growth, from 10.0% to 13.0% in one month, and in administration and executive support, from 4.1% to 6.2%. Customer service and success rose from 4.4% to 5.7%. Postings asking for generative AI skills held steady, up 2.2% a day while the market fell 15.8%.
This creates a quiet gap for experienced professionals. Many use AI tools every day in their work and never name them, and screening systems can only score what is written. Naming the specific AI tools of your function and tying each one to an outcome is one of the simplest corrections available in a tighter market.
Do remote jobs show the salary?
Rarely. On October 4, 2026, only 7.9% of live remote postings on Jobgether showed any salary information, fewer than one in twelve.
That leaves candidates entering most processes with less information than the employer. Researching the pay range for the role and level before the first conversation is the only way to close that gap, and a posting that does publish pay stands out for it.
What should experienced professionals do with this data?
Three adjustments follow from September's numbers. First, aim where you are competitive rather than where the posting is widest, which usually means roles open in your own country or region. Second, put one measurable result near the top of your profile and name the AI tools you use in your function. Third, send fewer applications and aim each one better, because in a shrinking market volume works against you.
