The primary pitfall is underestimating the language barrier. English-language remote roles in Japan are largely limited to international companies, which narrows the market significantly. Japanese business practices around seniority (senpai-kohai relationships), decision-making (nemawashi), and communication styles require cultural adaptation. Visa requirements for non-Japanese professionals are straightforward for skilled workers but require employer sponsorship.
