The market has also been affected by AI writing tools that have made first-draft generation faster, which has compressed demand for mid-level documentation work. The senior and leadership layer is different. Head of Documentation, Principal Technical Writer, Staff Technical Writer, and Developer Experience Writer roles at companies where documentation is a product-quality requirement rather than a nice-to-have are consistently hard to fill. The combination of technical understanding (sufficient to read code, understand APIs, and navigate complex engineering systems), writing quality, documentation architecture capability, and the organizational influence to advocate for documentation investment at the product level is not widely available.

Companies hiring Principal Technical Writers and Heads of Documentation expect candidates who have designed the documentation architecture — the information model that determines how content is structured, categorized, and navigated — built the documentation toolchain and publishing pipeline, defined the style guide and content standards that govern the entire documentation program, and measured documentation quality and user success through metrics like documentation-related support ticket deflection and documentation satisfaction scores. A second filter is technical depth: at the senior level, technical writers are expected to be technically capable enough to write API reference documentation by reading code and API specifications rather than waiting for engineering input, and those who cannot demonstrate this independent technical capability are screened for roles that require engineering hand-holding. Third, AI and content tooling currency: senior technical writers who have built workflows incorporating AI-assisted draft generation, maintained editorial quality standards over AI outputs, and governed the documentation pipeline through modern tools (Readme, GitBook, Docusaurus, or equivalent) are more competitive than those whose documentation experience is in older content management systems.
