Three issues arise consistently. First, the security context: Colombia's security situation has improved dramatically over the past two decades, but varies significantly by city and region. Bogota and Medellin have extensive safe professional and residential areas, but senior professionals should verify specific neighborhood safety as they would in any major Latin American city rather than treating the country as uniformly safe or uniformly unsafe. Second, the Colombian peso has experienced significant depreciation against the dollar, which creates the two-tier compensation dynamic present across most Latin American markets: domestic employer rates in pesos have eroded in USD purchasing power, while international employer rates in USD provide a substantial advantage. Third, while Colombia has strong tax treaties and a relatively straightforward business registration process, senior professionals working as independent contractors for international clients should verify their Colombian tax obligations, as the regulatory framework for cross-border professional services has evolved.
