Senior professionals relocating to the Netherlands should verify eligibility. Employment contracts in the Netherlands are highly regulated, with strong employee protections. Notice periods scale with tenure (up to 4 months at senior levels). The business culture values consensus and directness, which can be an adjustment for professionals from more hierarchical cultures.
The primary pitfall is assuming the 30% ruling applies automatically. Eligibility requires specific conditions including minimum salary thresholds and being recruited from abroad. Senior professionals already residing in the Netherlands may not qualify. Additionally, Dutch companies often advertise salaries as gross annual figures without specifying holiday allowance (vakantiegeld), which is an additional 8% paid in May. Factor this into total compensation calculations. The Netherlands also has a strong freelance/ZZP culture, but recent legislation is tightening the rules around self-employment to prevent false freelancing (schijnzelfstandigheid).
