Companies hiring Finance Directors and VP Finance are filtering for professionals who have influenced business decisions through financial insight, who have pushed back on commercially unsound initiatives with data, and who have built the financial discipline of organizations that were scaling too fast for their unit economics. The absence of these business influence signals from a senior finance profile consistently limits screening to delivery-oriented finance roles rather than strategic finance leadership roles. A second filter is technology company finance literacy for roles in the technology sector: finance leaders who have not engaged with SaaS unit economics (ARR reconciliation, Rule of 40, CAC payback, LTV modeling) are deprioritized at technology companies regardless of their general finance depth. Third, financial system and tool currency: senior finance professionals without demonstrable experience in modern FP&A platforms (Anaplan, Adaptive Insights, Pigment, or Cube) alongside advanced Excel and data visualization capability are viewed as behind the current market.
