Job description

We the Wild

We're building the leading plant care brand for modern consumers. We're redefining how people connect with their plants through science-backed products and fresh, sustainable thinking. We're scaling rapidly across multiple markets, and this is just the beginning.

We are an Australian-headquartered company with warehouse and manufacturing facilities in Houston, Texas, and Sydney, Australia.

About the Role

The Finance Manager is a hands-on, execution-focused finance professional responsible for keeping the day-to-day financial operations of We the Wild running with accuracy and discipline.

Reporting to the Operations Director, this is not a role for someone who prefers to stay at a distance from the numbers. You will be deeply involved in the details, owning financial outputs and ensuring the business always has a clear, accurate, and up-to-date understanding of its financial position.

You will be supported by a full-time Bookkeeper and an AR/AP team member, as well as dedicated external tax and accounting firms in both Australia and the US that manage local compliance obligations. Everything else sits with you—including month-end close, cash flow management, payroll, financial reporting, and maintaining the financial models and systems that underpin the business.

The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and is comfortable managing the operational complexity of retail, wholesale, e-commerce, warehouse, and manufacturing operations across two markets.

We're looking for someone who can maintain and continuously improve what we've built—not someone looking to start from scratch.

Startup life involves constant context-switching, navigating ambiguity, and solving new and unforeseen challenges. Throughout it all, the Finance Manager must remain thoughtful, precise, proactive, and solution-oriented, while consistently applying a commercial mindset to every aspect of the role.

This is a remote position that primarily operates within Australian time zones, with the expectation of at least one day per week of overlap with our US team.

Responsibilities

Financial Management

Financial Operations

  • Own the end-to-end month-end close process.
  • Prepare month-end reporting packs.
  • Review reconciliations prepared by the Bookkeeper and outsourced providers.
  • Ensure financial accuracy across both Australian and US entities.

Working Capital Management

  • Manage detailed cash flow across multiple regions.
  • Monitor inventory, working capital requirements, and foreign exchange (FX) exposure.

Transactional Oversight

  • Process and review payroll and payroll obligations in both the US and Australia, including employee on-costs and Employee Share Plan calculations.
  • Supervise the AR/AP team member and Bookkeeper, reviewing their work to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting that supports informed and agile decision-making.
  • Prepare the financial sections of board reporting packs as required.

Tax Compliance

  • Coordinate with external tax and accounting firms in Australia and the US to ensure compliance with all relevant obligations, including:
    • Annual tax filings
    • R&D claims
    • Ad hoc grant management
  • Serve as the internal point of contact and manage the flow of financial information to external advisors.

Deep expertise in Australian or US tax law is not required, as these responsibilities are supported externally.

Systems Management

  • Maintain and optimise financial system integrations to support current business operations.
  • Current systems include:
    • Xero
    • Cin7
    • Shopify
    • Stripe
    • Airwallex
  • Experience integrating inventory management systems with accounting platforms is essential.

Banking Relationships

  • Manage day-to-day banking relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial obligations.

Capital Raise Support

  • Prepare and maintain financial data packages to support business planning and capital-raising activities as required.

Internal Controls

  • Maintain robust internal controls and procedures to safeguard company assets.
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial information.

Commercial Finance & Business Partnering

Commercial Support

Partner closely with the Operations Director and department heads to provide financial analysis that supports strategic business decisions, including:

  • Pricing and customer profitability analysis, with a particular focus on the US retail landscape.
  • Financial input into supplier contract negotiations.
  • Analysis and tracking of gross margin improvement initiatives.
  • Product costing and manufacturing accounting across warehouse and manufacturing operations.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Execute the annual budgeting process.
  • Maintain and continuously improve rolling forecasts and three-way financial models.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide insights and recommendations to the leadership team.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in a finance role, with demonstrated ability to operate independently across a broad scope of responsibilities.
  • CPA qualification is required.
  • Experience in startup or high-growth consumer product environments is desirable.
  • Exposure to Australian or US retail businesses is advantageous.
  • Comfortable working with e-commerce metrics and measuring e-commerce financial performance.
  • Experience with Xero accounting software is preferred, including reconciliation of multiple system integrations.
  • Experience with Cin7 or another inventory management system, including its integration with accounting software, is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing accounting and warehouse finance management is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with multi-entity or multi-jurisdiction finance operations is advantageous.

Deep expertise in US or Australian tax law is not required, as these responsibilities are supported by external advisors.

  • Strong organisational and multitasking skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach to problem-solving and process improvement.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a small, globally distributed team.
