Executive assistance at the senior level is a function that has undergone a significant reappraisal in remote hiring. Traditional EA roles were considered inherently location-dependent, based on the assumption that supporting a senior executive required physical proximity. That assumption has been systematically tested and, for a meaningful segment of EA roles, disproved. Remote and distributed executive teams have demonstrated that strategic EA support, covering calendar architecture, communications management, project coordination, and executive decision support, can be delivered remotely at the highest levels. The qualification is important: the roles that have moved remote are those where the EA function is strategic and organizational rather than logistical and office-based.
General EA and administrative assistant roles are competitive. The title spans an enormous range of scope, from office-based administrative support to senior strategic EA roles that function as Chief of Staff proxies, and that range creates screening noise at every level. The strategic and senior end of the market, covering Executive Assistants to C-suite leaders at technology companies, Senior EAs managing distributed executive teams, and EA-to-Chief-of-Staff transitions at growth-stage companies, is less competitive than the general EA market. Companies that need an EA who can operate autonomously, exercise judgment, manage sensitive executive communications, and function as an organizational hub for a distributed leadership team are not finding that profile in abundance.
Remote executive assistant hiring is most available at companies with distributed or fully remote leadership teams, where physical co-location with the executive is not possible regardless of preference. Technology companies, venture-backed growth-stage companies, and professional services firms with distributed leadership are among the most active remote hirers of senior EAs. The strongest remote signal is at companies where the supported executive is themselves remote, which removes the proximity assumption entirely. Senior EAs at the Chief of Staff boundary, who take on project management, stakeholder coordination, and strategic communication responsibilities beyond traditional EA scope, are hired remotely at particularly high rates because the organizational value they deliver is scope-driven rather than location-driven.
Scope articulation is the primary filtering challenge. EA roles vary so widely in actual scope that automated systems and recruiters frequently screen based on title assumptions rather than actual capability. Senior EAs who have operated at the Chief of Staff boundary, managing board materials, coordinating cross-functional initiatives, owning executive communications strategy, and serving as a decision-making proxy for the executive in specific domains, need to describe that expanded scope explicitly rather than presenting themselves within the traditional EA frame. A second filter is the trust and judgment signal: companies hiring remote senior EAs are specifically screening for professionals who have demonstrated the judgment to handle sensitive executive information, communications, and decisions independently, because the absence of physical oversight makes that judgment non-negotiable. Explicitly addressing confidentiality scope, independent decision-making in the executive's absence, and communications management at the board level is important for remote EA applications at the senior level.
