Technical/Engineering Documentation Writer – AI/ML

Profile Overview

The ideal candidate combines deep engineering knowledge with strong technical writing and editing ability. This person must be comfortable working directly with engineers, understanding engineering terminology and complex AI concepts, and independently determining whether technical documentation is accurate and makes sense.

A traditional writing background alone is not sufficient. Strong candidates may be software engineers who are accomplished technical communicators or technical writers with substantial hands-on engineering experience.

Scope & Commitment

This is a fractional, ongoing engagement with work occurring in concentrated spurts around releases rather than at a consistent weekly volume. Approximately 20 hours per month is anticipated initially, with flexibility to structure the engagement as a block of hours. There is strong interest in retaining the right person long term and integrating them into the release process.

Responsibilities

• Develop and refine public-facing technical documentation supporting AI/model releases.
• Consolidate technical contributions from multiple engineers into a clear, consistent narrative and voice.
• Sanity-check documentation for technical accuracy, clarity, completeness, and audience understanding.
• Establish frameworks, standards, and repeatable processes for technical release documentation.
• Work quickly around rolling release timelines and periods of concentrated documentation needs.
• Translate highly technical engineering material into polished documentation for external technical audiences.

Skills & Qualifications

• Deep technical/engineering expertise is essential.
• Having been part of a frontier lab is a huge plus.
• Demonstrated experience creating public-facing technical documentation for complex engineering projects.
• Track record supporting technical releases, ideally involving open- or closed-source AI models, open-source systems, or closely related technologies.
• Strong understanding of AI/ML, software engineering, and engineering terminology.
• Exceptional technical writing, editing, synthesis, and information-organization skills.
• Ability to collaborate directly with highly technical engineering teams and work with minimal hand-holding.
• Able to move quickly, create structure from fragmented technical inputs, and maintain accuracy across contributions from multiple engineers.
• Experience producing documentation at organizations with sophisticated engineering or open-source environments is highly desirable.
