Switchgear Technical Writer / Application Engineering Writer

Objective

Develop a comprehensive technical documentation library for low- and medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution equipment, translating existing product specifications and engineering details into clear, organized documentation suitable for engineering review, project submittals, approval, and installation.

Profile Overview

We are seeking a technical writer with direct experience in switchgear, power distribution, or electrical engineering environments. The ideal candidate combines strong technical writing skills with hands-on knowledge of low-voltage and medium-voltage equipment, particularly 480V+ power systems.

Experience in application engineering or design engineering within the switchgear industry is a significant plus, particularly for candidates who have worked in customer-facing roles and can clearly explain complex technical concepts.

Candidates with experience at or working with manufacturers such as ABB, Eaton, Schneider Electric, Siemens, or similar power distribution/switchgear organizations are especially relevant.

Scope

The initial project will focus on building out a technical specification and submittal documentation library from existing product specifications, engineering information, reference documents, and SME input.

• Target of approximately six weeks for the initial documentation
• Collaboration with the SME responsible for developing product specifications
• Potential for continued project work and ongoing contract

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed technical specifications and submittal documentation for low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution equipment.
• Create and organize a reusable documentation library that can be adapted to different engineering projects and designs.
• Translate technical product specifications and engineering details into clear, accurate written documentation.
• Work directly with SMEs to gather missing technical details, ask appropriate engineering questions, and validate documentation.
• Use existing industry and competitor documentation as reference points for structure and content.
• Support documentation related to equipment such as switchgear, PDUs, RPPs/remote power panels, and related power distribution systems.
• Use AI tools such as Claude where appropriate for research, reference, data consolidation, and accelerating drafting while maintaining technical accuracy.

Skills & Qualifications

• Required: Previous technical writing, engineering, or design experience involving switchgear, low-voltage/medium-voltage equipment, or closely related power distribution systems.
• Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, ideally 480V and above.
• Ability to understand technical specifications and convert engineering information into structured, professional documentation.
• Familiarity with technical submittals, engineering specifications, and documentation used for project approval and installation.
• Experience collaborating directly with engineers and technical SMEs.
• Highly preferred: Application engineering or design engineering experience within the switchgear/power distribution industry.
• Highly preferred: Customer-facing engineering experience and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
• Comfortable leveraging AI-assisted tools responsibly to organize information and accelerate technical documentation workflows.

Client is expanding into the OEM switchgear and power distribution equipment market, developing solutions across low-voltage and medium-voltage systems, including PDUs and remote power panels (RPPs). The company is actively building this business unit with a growing design and operations team and is developing the technical documentation infrastructure needed to support engineering projects, customer requirements, approvals, and equipment installations.
