We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced environmental lawyers with substantive expertise in NEPA review, environmental impact analysis, CERCLA matters, and environmental liability disputes.
This role involves reviewing realistic environmental legal matters and comparing multiple blinded legal work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and practical usefulness. Selected lawyers will provide structured preference decisions and concise written reasoning grounded in their professional environmental law experience.
Key Responsibilities
NEPA Legal Review

Review matters arising under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

Assess the legal sufficiency of environmental review materials

Evaluate whether legal analysis appropriately addresses applicable NEPA requirements

Identify substantive omissions, unsupported conclusions, or weaknesses in environmental analysis
-
Apply practical judgement grounded in environmental regulatory practice
Environmental Impact Statements

Review draft Environmental Impact Statements (EIS)
-
Assess legal sufficiency, completeness, and supporting analysis
-
Evaluate treatment of environmental impacts, alternatives, and relevant considerations

Identify issues that could affect the defensibility of an environmental review
-
Assess whether work products reflect appropriate environmental-law standards
CERCLA Matters

Review legal work involving the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)

Evaluate liability and contribution issues

Assess legal arguments relating to potentially responsible parties and environmental remediation costs

Identify incomplete or inaccurate treatment of CERCLA issues
-
Apply substantive judgement to complex environmental liability matters
Contribution Claims & Allocation

Review CERCLA contribution claims, defence strategies, and allocation analyses

Assess competing arguments regarding responsibility and cost allocation

Evaluate factual and legal considerations affecting liability

Identify weaknesses or omissions in proposed defence positions

Judge whether recommendations are practical and legally well supported
Blinded Legal Work Product Comparison

Read a synthetic environmental legal matter and its underlying documents

Review six blinded legal deliverables, labelled A–F

Complete five head-to-head comparisons against a common comparator output

Assess each work product holistically rather than focusing on isolated drafting differences

Select the stronger response based on substantive legal quality
Legal Quality Evaluation

Assess work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and usefulness

Identify material legal errors or omissions

Evaluate whether reasoning is coherent and adequately supported

Assess whether recommendations would be useful in actual environmental law practice

Ideal Profile

Qualified lawyer with substantive professional experience in environmental law

Strong experience in one or more of the following:

Engagement Details

Part-time independent contractor engagement

Fully remote

Compensation: $90–$110/hour

Expected commitment: approximately 13 hours across the engagement

Work consists primarily of reviewing realistic environmental legal matters and comparing blinded legal work products

All project work is subject to NDA and confidentiality requirements

Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
