Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced lawyers with substantive expertise in international arbitration, cross-border disputes, sanctions, export controls, and related international dispute-resolution matters.

This role involves reviewing realistic legal matters and comparing multiple blinded legal work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and practical usefulness. Selected lawyers will provide structured preference decisions and concise written reasoning based on their professional legal expertise.

Key Responsibilities

International Arbitration Review

  • Review legal work involving international arbitration matters
  • Assess legal reasoning, procedural analysis, and strategic recommendations
  • Evaluate the completeness and practical usefulness of proposed approaches
  • Identify substantive legal errors, omissions, or unsupported conclusions
  • Apply professional judgement grounded in international disputes practice

Cross-Border Disputes

  • Evaluate work products involving complex cross-border disputes
  • Review jurisdictional, procedural, and enforcement considerations
  • Assess strategic options across international legal contexts
  • Identify issues affecting the strength or practicality of proposed legal approaches
  • Evaluate whether conclusions appropriately reflect the underlying facts and documents

Award Enforcement

  • Review matters involving recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards
  • Assess legal analysis concerning enforcement strategy and procedural requirements
  • Evaluate potential obstacles and competing legal considerations
  • Identify incomplete or inaccurate treatment of enforcement issues
  • Judge whether proposed recommendations are practically useful to legal practitioners

Sanctions & Export Controls

  • Review work products involving sanctions and export-control considerations
  • Assess identification and treatment of relevant legal restrictions
  • Evaluate whether legal conclusions are appropriately supported
  • Identify omissions, inconsistencies, or material compliance concerns
  • Apply substantive judgement to matters where regulatory restrictions intersect with disputes

Emergency & Interim Relief

  • Evaluate matters involving emergency measures and interim relief
  • Review procedural strategy and legal reasoning
  • Assess urgency, available remedies, and practical considerations
  • Identify weaknesses in proposed approaches
  • Evaluate whether recommendations adequately address the client's immediate legal position

Blinded Legal Work Product Comparison

  • Read a synthetic legal matter and its underlying documents
  • Review six blinded legal deliverables, labelled A–F
  • Complete five head-to-head comparisons against a common comparator output
  • Evaluate work products holistically rather than focusing on isolated drafting differences
  • Select the stronger response based on substantive legal quality

Legal Quality Evaluation

  • Assess each work product for correctness, completeness, judgement, and usefulness
  • Identify material legal errors or omissions
  • Evaluate whether reasoning is coherent and well supported
  • Assess whether recommendations would be useful in actual legal practice
  • Distinguish substantive quality differences from minor stylistic preferences

Written Legal Reasoning

  • Provide a short, specific rationale for every preference decision
  • Explain the legal or practical considerations supporting each judgement
  • Reference relevant strengths, weaknesses, or omissions in the reviewed work
  • Maintain precise and professional written English
  • Follow project instructions and evaluation criteria consistently

Ideal Profile

  • Qualified lawyer with substantive professional experience in international disputes
  • Strong experience in one or more of the following:
    • International arbitration
    • Arbitral award enforcement
    • Cross-border disputes
    • Sanctions
    • Export controls
    • Emergency or interim relief
  • Able to evaluate legal work holistically for correctness, completeness, judgement, and practical usefulness
  • Strong legal analytical skills
  • Precise written English
  • Comfortable comparing competing legal approaches and explaining preference decisions
  • Able to work independently against detailed written instructions and deadlines

Engagement Details

  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
  • H1-B and STEM OPT support is unavailable for this engagement
