Career Opportunity

 

We are currently seeking a Designer, Track, to join our Streetcar Way Engineering team!

 

The Designer, Track provides expertise related to the development and selection of appropriate design concepts, examination of technical data, and production of design information as it relates to existing and/or proposed surface track and infrastructure projects on the maintenance and rehabilitation of track systems.

What You Will Do

 

As a Designer, Track, you will be responsible for planning, scheduling, and managing the design and delivery of streetcar track and special trackwork projects in accordance with TTC standards, specifications, and project requirements. You will develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed trackwork designs; prepare and review technical drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and reports; and ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and safe. In this role, you will conduct technical reviews to assess design quality, constructability, and compliance with TTC standards and industry best practices, while investigating and evaluating track components, systems, and construction methods to support continuous improvement.  

 

Additionally, the Designer, Track will coordinate and provide technical direction to draftspersons, survey crews, and other design staff throughout the preparation of technical documentation and project deliverables. You will also review and approve final design packages for tendering and construction, resolve technical issues with suppliers, and ensure materials and components meet TTC design requirements. In addition, the Designer, Track will oversee quality assurance and quality control activities related to the installation and commissioning of new surface track systems, as well as coordinate inspections of track materials to support acceptance, payment, and installation activities.

 

As a Designer, Track, you will work closely with TTC departments, public utilities, municipal agencies, consultants, and contractors to ensure design requirements are incorporated into project plans, and that related work is effectively coordinated.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

 

  • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Mechanical or Civil Engineering Technology) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • OACETT Certification as an Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) is considered an asset.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario is considered an asset.
  • Directly related experience in the track or roadway construction design field.
  • Sound knowledge of permanent way design principles, track maintenance, and construction practices.
  • Familiarity with railway/transit industry standards (AREMA, ASTM etc.), structural design requirements, and modern surveying techniques is considered an asset.
  • Sound judgement and well-developed mathematical, critical thinking, organizational, verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Good project management skills in order to develop and proceed with complex investigations involving plans and specifications for alternative track alignments, material procurements, and construction methodologies.
  • Computer proficiency with a strong knowledge of applications related to the work (i.e. reporting and scheduling systems) and computer aided drawing (MicroStation, AutoCad etc.).
  • Ability to give direction to technical staff and coordinate work with regards to deadlines, accuracy and quantity.
