Job description

Summary:

The Denver Post is seeking a reporter to cover the Denver Broncos, our most high-profile sports beat. This position is for the No. 2 spot on our Broncos coverage team. We are looking for a great teammate who will work in tandem with our lead Broncos reporter to blanket the beat in a highly competitive environment. This person will be responsible for providing fresh content for our website and writing stories sophisticated enough for the most ardent football fans.

What you will do:

  • Look for and create news story ideas in coordination with the assignment editor and lead Broncos writer

  • Research, observe surroundings, and conduct interviews over the telephone and in person to gather pertinent information for news stories

  • Interact with colleagues in a professional manner

  • Organize information and write accurate, clear, interesting, and grammatically correct stories while meeting deadlines

  • Produce stories of varying complexity and form

  • Seek out and report news for immediate publication on the Post’s digital platforms and for print publications

  • Discuss story formulation with editors and edit or rewrite stories, as necessary

  • Develop sources and check with them on a regular basis to break exclusive news

  • Understand and implement SEO techniques to ensure content reaches largest online audience; stay abreast of latest trends

  • Request appropriate photos, video, and graphics for stories; work closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments

What you will bring:

  • Demonstrated ability to dig for stories, break news, produce enterprise, and provide digital-specific coverage that draws readers and generates subscriptions

  • Experience as a reporter who can develop sources and provide a steady stream of fresh, compelling ideas; a background covering football is required, preferably at the professional level

  • A strong grounding in journalism and sports coverage with the ability to pitch in on other beats during the offseason

  • Strong reporting and writing skills

  • Ability to multitask and work quickly to meet deadlines

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience

Benefits and Compensation:

The salary range is $58,448 - $80,080 + cell phone stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
