This role is ideal for a detail-oriented payroll professional with strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Modern Awards, reconciliations, and payroll systems. Working within a collaborative payroll team, you'll play a key role in ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, and an excellent employee experience across a diverse workforce.

The AU Payroll Officer is responsible for supporting the accurate and timely processing of Australian payroll across multiple entities and payroll files. Working under the direction of the Senior Payroll Manager, the position will complete high-volume payroll administration, timesheet validation, employee record maintenance, reconciliations and payroll support activities across a predominantly casual workforce.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing & Administration

  • Process payroll for a high-volume workforce, including casual, hourly, and salaried employees.
  • Review and validate timesheets, rosters, leave approvals, allowances, penalties, overtime, deductions, and employee changes.
  • Apply Australian Modern Awards and established payroll rules under the guidance of the Senior Payroll Manager.
  • Maintain accurate employee records, including tax, superannuation, banking, and employment details.
  • Prepare and process payroll-related employee lifecycle transactions, including new starters, transfers, variations, terminations, leave payments, back pays, adjustments, and final pays.

Employee Support & Payroll Compliance

  • Respond to routine payroll queries from employees and managers, escalating complex or compliance-related matters as required.
  • Liaise with managers to ensure all timesheets, leave requests, and payroll inputs are submitted and approved before payroll cut-off deadlines.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve payroll discrepancies prior to payroll finalisation.
  • Support payroll compliance activities, including payroll tax, superannuation, workers compensation, and portable long service leave administration.

Reconciliations, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Assist with payroll-related reconciliations, including leave balances, payroll liabilities, superannuation, payroll tax, and general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare payroll reports, variance analyses, supporting schedules, payroll journals, and other documentation required for review.
  • Apply basic double-entry accounting principles when reviewing or adjusting payroll journals.
  • Maintain payroll records, audit documentation, checklists, and process documentation.
  • Support payroll process improvements, system testing, and future workforce or entity expansion initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Commerce, Human Resources or a related discipline.
  • At least three years of Australian payroll experience, preferably within a high-volume, multi-entity or casualised workforce environment.
  • Practical experience processing Australian weekly or fortnightly payroll from timesheets through to finalisation.
  • Working knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Fair Work requirements, superannuation, PAYG withholding and payroll tax fundamentals.
  • Experience applying Australian Modern Awards, with exposure to hospitality, leisure, fitness, events, beauty or similar industries highly regarded.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills including formulas, lookups, pivot tables and reconciliation of payroll data.
  • Experience using Employment Hero Payroll is highly regarded. Comparable Australian payroll system experience is desirable.
  • Sound understanding of payroll reconciliations, payroll journals and basic double-entry accounting principles.
  • Strong numerical accuracy, attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies within large data sets.
  • Ability to manage recurring deadlines, follow documented controls and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with a professional and service-focused approach.
  • High standards of confidentiality, reliability and accountability.
