IT development is a broad category spanning application development, systems integration, enterprise software, and technical architecture. Unlike pure software engineering roles, IT development positions often sit at the intersection of business operations and technology, requiring professionals who understand both codebases and business processes. For senior IT developers with 10+ years of experience, remote opportunities are growing but the landscape requires careful navigation, particularly around how companies define and scope these roles.
Mid-level roles in general IT development are competitive, but senior positions in enterprise systems, ERP implementation, and IT architecture face significantly less competition. The key differentiator is specialization: generalist "IT developer" roles attract high volumes, while roles requiring specific platform expertise (Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, Oracle) at senior levels have far fewer qualified candidates. Companies struggle to find experienced IT professionals who can both architect solutions and manage stakeholder relationships across distributed teams.
Senior individual contributors (8 to 15 years) have the strongest remote hiring prospects in IT development. Technical leads and solution architects are in high demand remotely, particularly for companies managing multi-platform environments. IT management roles (IT Director, VP of IT) trend remote at mid-sized companies but remain predominantly hybrid at enterprise organizations. The exception is cloud-native and SaaS companies where IT leadership has been distributed from day one.
The primary challenge is role definition ambiguity. "IT development" means different things at different companies, and ATS systems struggle with the overlap between software engineering, IT operations, and systems administration. Senior IT professionals often have breadth across multiple domains, but keyword scanning rewards depth in single technologies. Additionally, many senior IT developers have enterprise backgrounds with proprietary systems not easily translated to job board keywords.
