Public Health Data Analyst III

Primary purpose: 

Provides data analysis and public-health expertise to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), with a focus on antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance. Applies analytical methods to complex healthcare data to generate actionable insights. Collaborates with technical, clinical, and public-health partners to interpret findings and support data-driven decision-making. 

A successful candidate will do the following:

• Manage end-to-end analytic workflows, including accessing, integrating, cleaning, transforming, and analyzing data from multiple sources using Python and R
• Apply appropriate statistical and analytic methods and interpret and summarize findings
• Assess and monitor data quality, identify anomalies and other quality issues, and develop automated, reproducible quality-control processes
• Conduct clinical and operational analyses using Health Level Seven International® (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources® (FHIR)-based data, including evaluating FHIR–EHR mapping, patient-identity matching, encounter reconciliation, and standardization of clinical data using FHIR and other healthcare terminologies
• Analyze client needs and translate them into formal analytic, data, or system requirements 
• Test applications, troubleshoot issues, and provide actionable feedback to software developers and quality-assurance staff 
• Maintain knowledge of current public-health practices and relevant industry developments
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to plan, develop, and implement projects and related materials 
• Communicate analytic findings, recommendations, and statistical methods verbally and in writing to technical and nontechnical audiences, including clinical, product, and project teams as well as clients and management 
• Develop and deliver training, project updates, and presentations related to NHSN’s work on antimicrobial use and resistance

• Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or a related field and at least nine years of relevant experience; or master’s degree in one of these fields and at least seven years of relevant experience
• Experience using Python or R to import and manipulate data and conduct analyses 
• Experience managing large datasets, moving and merging files from different platforms, cleaning and aggregating data, and performing quality control 
• Experience with quality-assurance testing or user-acceptance testing involving healthcare data 
• Excellent attention to detail and critical-thinking skills 
• If required by the project, ability to successfully complete and obtain a federal Position of Public Trust Level 5 background investigation, meet all eligibility criteria, and maintain the required clearance throughout employment

Preferred qualifications:

• Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or related field
• Experience using SAS, R, and Python
• Experience with antimicrobial use, antimicrobial resistance, and/or data regarding healthcare-associated infections
• Familiarity with NHSN
• Experience with real-world analysis and mapping of HL7 FHIR, including normalization and standardization of clinical data 
• Experience analyzing large, complex healthcare datasets, including patient-identity matching across clinical systems, encounter reconciliation, longitudinal record construction, and deduplication
