Summary:

As the Financial Lines portfolio continues to grow, the Financial Lines Claims Counsel will play a meaningful role in the development of the Financial Lines Claims organization. This position manages high-exposure and complex Financial Lines claims and brings deep expertise in Financial Lines coverage and claims handling. The role focuses primarily on Directors & Officers (D&O), Financial Institutions Professional Liability (E&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), Fiduciary, and Fidelity claims, including complex litigation, class actions, securities matters, and high-severity financial loss exposures. The position offers significant autonomy, visibility, and the ability to influence claim outcomes and the continued expansion of the business.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage a diverse portfolio of complex Financial Lines claims from initial notice through resolution.
  • Analyze coverage, liability, damages, and exposure issues, establish appropriate reserves, and provide accurate claim assessments involving D&O, Financial Institutions E&O, EPL, Fiduciary, and Fidelity policies.
  • Draft coverage position letters, reservation of rights letters, and other claim-related communications.
  • Evaluate and manage high-severity matters, including securities litigation, class actions, regulatory investigations, and complex commercial disputes.
  • Develop and execute strategic claim resolution plans, including settlement negotiations within delegated authority and escalation of matters requiring higher-level approval.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation strategy while controlling legal spend.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, actuarial, legal, and senior leadership on emerging risks, claim trends, and portfolio performance.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with insureds, brokers, defense counsel, and business partners.
  • Prepare claim summaries, authority requests, and management reports while maintaining accurate claim documentation and file records in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the continued growth and development of the Financial Lines claims operation.

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and in good standing.
  • 7+ years of experience handling Financial Lines claims, coverage litigation, or complex commercial litigation.
  • Strong knowledge of D&O, Financial Institutions E&O, EPL, Fiduciary, and Fidelity coverages.
  • Experience evaluating complex coverage issues and large-loss exposures.

Other qualifications and skills:

  • Carrier or broker-side Financial Lines claims experience preferred.
  • Experience handling claims involving financial institutions, private equity firms, investment managers, or other complex financial organizations preferred.
  • Background managing securities claims, class actions, regulatory matters, and high-exposure commercial disputes preferred.
  • Experience working with primary policies preferred.
  • Professional liability and financial institution claim expertise preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage a sophisticated caseload and make sound claim decisions.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

SALARY: The estimated salary range for this position is $150,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year. This is a good-faith assessment of the salary range for this position only. In determining the actual salary within this range, MSIG USA will consider a candidate’s relevant experience, location, and other job-related factors.
