Job description

Overview:

Thank you for considering IT Concepts dba Kentro, where innovation drives opportunity and collaboration leads to success. Our dynamic community of experts is fully committed to advancing our customers' missions, fostering professional growth, and making a positive impact on our communities.

By joining our supportive community, you will find that Kentro is dedicated to your personal and professional development. Together, we can drive meaningful change, spark innovation, and achieve extraordinary milestones.

Kentro is hiring for a Technical Writer in support of a comprehensive cybersecurity modernization and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled automation project for a U.S. Government program that includes cybersecurity engineering, defense operations, continuous monitoring, Risk Management, security assessments and compliance, and cybersecurity automation platforms. This modernization effort encompasses the security tools, processes, and workflows that support the client’s full cybersecurity mission — transitioning from legacy manual approaches to an integrated, automated, AI-enabled operating model that streamlines cybersecurity processes and workflows while reducing the operational burden and improving the overall cybersecurity posture of the client’s enterprise systems.

The Technical Writer will translate the work of security engineers, architects, and assessors into clear, accurate, audience-appropriate documentation — from ATO artifacts and system security plans to operator runbooks and executive briefings. This is a role for someone who is comfortable sitting in technical design discussions, asking questions until the details are right, and writing for readers who range from engineers to agency leadership.

Location: Remote with occasional meetings at customer site in DC - This position can be performed remotely within the United States and will support Eastern Time working hours.

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position is $110,000-120,000/annually. Kentro determines compensation by evaluating current government contracting and commercial market conditions, as well as the role’s specific requirements. Final salary placement within this range will be based on the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, education, certifications, location, and security clearance level, where applicable.

This Job Description reflects the primary duties of the role; however, it is not intended to be all‑inclusive. Team members may be asked to take on additional responsibilities in alignment with customer expectations, business needs, and Kentro’s culture of collaboration and adaptability.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain project documentation (i.e. Management Plan, Transition Plan, Schedule, etc). and security documentation such as System Security Plans (SSPs), Security Assessment Reports, Plans of Action & Milestones (POA&Ms), Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), and supporting Risk Management Framework (RMF) artifacts.
  • Write and update standard operating procedures, runbooks, playbooks, and work instructions for security operations, incident response, and system administration teams.
  • Produce architecture and design documentation for modernization initiatives, working directly with engineers and solution architects to capture current-state, target-state, and transition approaches.
  • Draft policy, standards, and guidance documents aligned to NIST, agency, and program requirements.
  • Prepare contract deliverables (CDRLs) to the schedule, format, and quality standards, and route them through internal and customer review cycles through customer acceptance.
  • Interview subject matter experts and translate technical inputs — architecture diagrams, scan results, engineering notes — into finished deliverable products.
  • Edit and standardize documentation authored by technical staff for clarity, consistency, grammar, and adherence to the program style guide.
  • Maintain document version control, change logs, and the program's documentation repository.
  • Work with the technical team to create and maintain system diagrams, process flows, and tables that support the narrative (i.e., Visio/Lucidchart/draw.io).
  • Ensure deliverables meet Section 508 accessibility requirements and applicable markings and handling requirements.
  • Support the development of training materials, briefing decks, and onboarding documentation as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Communications, Journalism, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent experience considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 3-5+ years of professional technical writing experience, including at least 2 years supporting IT or cybersecurity programs.
  • Demonstrated experience producing documentation for federal government customers, including familiarity with contract deliverable processes and review cycles.
  • Working knowledge of the NIST Risk Management Framework and NIST SP 800-53 control families.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity and AI concepts and terminology (access control, encryption, vulnerability management, network security, incident response) sufficient to interview SMEs and write accurately without constant supervision.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word (styles, templates, cross-references, TOC generation), PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple deliverables against firm deadlines with minimal direction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong editorial judgment.
  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) effectively with technical teams, program leadership, and government customers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing documentation products supporting ATO packages, continuous monitoring, or FedRAMP authorization efforts.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles such as zero trust (NIST SP 800-207), cloud security (AWS/Azure GovCloud), or identity and access management modernization.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, including model development lifecycles, data pipelines, and AI-enabled applications.
  • Experience developing technical deliverables associated with Microsoft Azure Government, AWS GovCloud or hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience with eMASS, Xacta, or similar GRC/compliance tooling.
Docs-as-code experience: Markdown, Git, Confluence, DITA, or MadCap Flare.
  • Prior experience in an Agile delivery environment (Jira, sprint ceremonies, documentation as part of the definition of done).
  • Experience writing for both technical operators and non-technical executive audiences on the same program.
