Power Sector Specialist, South Asia (Full time – Remote, preferably Delhi) 

 

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Power Sector Specialist to support IEEFA's research on India's power sector transition. This role involves conducting policy and market research, analysing national and state-level power sector developments, and developing evidence-based insights to accelerate renewable energy deployment and power sector reforms.  

  

The successful candidate will work closely with a collaborative team to produce high-quality research and actively engage with central and state governments, regulators, utilities, industry, and other stakeholders. The role requires translating research into actionable policy recommendations that support India's clean energy transition. 

 

IEEFA is an NGO/nonprofit that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of 70+ analysts and communications personnel located in 15 countries across the globe.  IEEFA produces a significant volume of original research, as well as ongoing analysis and reports on issues affecting energy industries. Roles and Responsibilities 

  • Research and stakeholder engagement:
    • Conduct primary and secondary research on India's power sector, with a focus on renewable energy, electricity markets, and grid transition at the national and state levels.  
    • Prepare research reports, policy briefs, presentations, blogs, and other knowledge products.  
    • Engage with central and state government agencies, regulators, utilities, system operators, industry, and development partners through consultations, workshops, roundtables, and meetings.  
    • Present research findings and support policy dialogues to inform decision-making at the national and state levels.  
  • Renewable energy and grids: 
    • Track national and state-level policies, regulations, and market developments supporting renewable energy deployment and grid integration.  
    • Analyse opportunities and barriers to scaling renewable energy through transmission expansion, grid flexibility, energy storage, demand-side flexibility, distributed energy resources, and digitalisation.  
    • Assess emerging technologies and business models, including battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid renewable energy projects, to support a reliable and resilient power system.  
    • Inform national and state-level strategies. 
  • Power markets: 
    • Analyse national and state-level developments in electricity market design, regulatory frameworks, and market reforms.
    • Assess emerging market mechanisms, including Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), Contracts for Difference (CfDs), peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading, and other business models that improve market efficiency, system flexibility, and renewable energy integration.  
    • Identify opportunities to strengthen market-based approaches that support renewable energy integration and power sector transformation. 
    • Develop evidence-based policy recommendations to strengthen electricity markets and support the energy transition. 


Knowledge and Skill Requirements 

  • 5+ years of experience in the power sector, renewable energy, electricity markets, utilities, consulting, public policy, or applied research.   
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, preferably Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or Power Systems. Candidates with degrees in Energy Studies, Economics, Finance, Public Policy, Statistics, Mathematics, Management, or related fields will also be considered. 
  • Master's degree in Energy Studies, Public Policy, Economics, Management, or related fields preferred. 
  • Strong understanding of India's power sector, including renewable energy, transmission, distribution, electricity markets, and regulatory frameworks.   
  • Demonstrated experience analysing national and/or state-level energy policies, regulations, and market developments.   
  • Experience engaging with government agencies, regulators, utilities, industry, or other power sector stakeholders is desirable.   
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of Python, R, or similar analytical tools would be an advantage.   
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Experience presenting research findings and facilitating discussions with technical and non-technical audiences through workshops, webinars, conferences, and stakeholder consultations. 
  • Proven ability to manage multiple research workstreams independently, collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, and deliver high-quality outputs within deadlines.

Compensation and Benefits 

Full-time 12-month fixed-term employment contract with the option of extension by mutual agreement and a market competitive remuneration. Pay rates are also based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. 

 

Work Schedule 

Full-time, 5 days/week with occasional evening or weekend work to accommodate time zones. 

 

Location 

Remote (India), with preference for candidates based in Delhi or another well-connected city. 

 

Travel 

Some travel is required. All team members attend IEEFA’s annual conference and international team retreat. 


Physical Demand and Work Environment. 

Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back, and neck strain.
