Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced English-language music professionals with backgrounds in songwriting, lyric writing, composition, performance, or music journalism.

This role focuses on evaluating generated music and lyrics across a wide range of contemporary genres. Selected experts will assess lyrical quality, creativity, originality, linguistic naturalness, and alignment with detailed project criteria, applying professional knowledge of English-language music, songwriting conventions, slang, and regional expression.

Key Responsibilities

Lyrics Evaluation

  • Review English-language lyrics for overall quality, creativity, coherence, and originality
  • Assess whether lyrics sound natural and professionally written
  • Evaluate word choice, phrasing, idiomatic language, slang, and regional expressions
  • Identify awkward, generic, repetitive, or stylistically inconsistent writing
  • Apply professional lyrical judgement across different genres and creative styles

Originality & Similarity Review

  • Compare generated lyrics with published songs to identify meaningful similarities
  • Assess whether phrases, structures, themes, or lyrical patterns appear overly derivative
  • Distinguish common songwriting conventions from potentially significant similarities
  • Evaluate originality within the context of contemporary music
  • Document relevant observations clearly and consistently

Prompt & Creative Alignment

  • Assess how effectively lyrics follow the requested theme, style, mood, or creative direction
  • Review adherence to specific lyrical or musical instructions
  • Evaluate consistency between intended genre and creative execution
  • Identify deviations from requested tone, subject matter, structure, or format
  • Assess whether creative choices feel intentional and musically appropriate

Language & Regional Expression

  • Evaluate natural English usage across relevant regional contexts
  • Assess slang, colloquial phrasing, cultural references, and idiomatic expression
  • Identify wording that sounds unnatural or inappropriate for the intended audience
  • Evaluate whether regional language is used credibly and consistently
  • Apply cultural and linguistic judgement beyond literal grammatical correctness

Music & Genre Context

  • Apply broad knowledge of contemporary genres, sub-genres, and artists
  • Evaluate lyrics within their intended musical and cultural context
  • Assess whether stylistic conventions are used effectively
  • Identify genre mismatches or implausible creative choices
  • Recognise contemporary songwriting trends and conventions

Comparative Quality Assessment

  • Compare alternative lyrical or musical outputs against detailed quality standards
  • Evaluate differences in creativity, originality, naturalness, and prompt adherence
  • Distinguish substantive quality issues from subjective stylistic preferences
  • Apply evaluation criteria consistently across assignments
  • Provide clear reasoning for scoring and preference decisions

Structured Feedback

  • Produce concise written assessments of reviewed material
  • Clearly identify strengths, weaknesses, and specific quality issues
  • Support evaluations with concrete observations from the content
  • Follow detailed project instructions and evaluation standards
  • Maintain consistency and attention to detail across repeated reviews

Ideal Profile

  • Professional experience as a songwriter, lyricist, composer, performer, music journalist, or closely related music professional
  • Strong command of written and spoken English
  • Strong understanding of natural word choice, idiomatic language, slang, and regional expression
  • Broad familiarity with contemporary music genres, sub-genres, and artists
  • Ability to evaluate lyrical creativity, originality, and stylistic quality
  • Headphones or studio monitors suitable for critical listening
  • Formal training in music performance, theory, or composition is advantageous
  • Credited or published songwriting work is highly valued
  • Strong written communication and ability to provide precise, structured feedback
