Location: Remote (Israel preferred)
Reports to: Breaking News Desk Lead


About the Role

JNS is building a dedicated Breaking News Desk to deliver fast, accurate, around-the-clock coverage of Israel and the Jewish world. As a Breaking News Writer, you'll be responsible for monitoring developing stories, identifying newsworthy events, and publishing concise, factual updates to JNS's live breaking news ticker.


This is a fast-paced role requiring excellent news judgment, strong writing skills and the ability to work calmly under pressure. Writers are expected to move quickly while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and verification.


Responsibilities

  • Monitor official sources, Hebrew-language media, wire services and other news outlets for breaking developments.
  • Write and publish clear, accurate breaking news updates for the JNS live ticker.
  • Maintain a steady flow of news updates throughout each shift, increasing output significantly during major breaking news events.
  • Exercise strong editorial judgment to determine what constitutes breaking news and how stories should be prioritized.
  • Verify information before publication and adhere strictly to JNS sourcing and attribution standards.
  • Coordinate closely with the Shift Editor and Breaking News Desk Lead throughout each shift.
  • Ensure seamless handoffs during breaks and at shift changes so coverage remains continuous.
  • Assist with monitoring social media and other emerging sources while following JNS verification protocols.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in workflow, monitoring practices and newsroom efficiency.


What We're Looking For

  • Previous newsroom or journalism experience, preferably in breaking news.
  • Exceptional news judgment and the ability to identify stories quickly.
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to work accurately under tight deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Israeli current affairs and the regional news landscape.
  • Ability to read Hebrew is strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a remote newsroom using Slack and other digital tools.
