Engagement Manager, High Reliability Care – Medical Staff Governance

About Chartis

The challenges facing US healthcare are longstanding and all too familiar. We are Chartis, and we believe in better. We work with more than 1,900 organizations annually to develop and activate transformative strategies, operating models, and organizational enterprises that make US healthcare more affordable, accessible, safe, and human. With more than 1,450 professionals, we help providers, payers, technology innovators, retail companies, and investors create and embrace solutions that tangibly and materially reshape healthcare for the better. Our family of brands—Chartis, Jarrard, Greeley, and HealthScape Advisors—is 100% focused on healthcare and each has a longstanding commitment to helping transform healthcare in big and small ways. Believe in better.

Chartis has offices in Boston, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., and Nashville.

Remote work is allowed. Client travel is variable, depending on type of client and project. On average, up to 25-50% client travel is required.

Role Overview

To support our rapid growth, we seek an experienced Engagement Manager to join Chartis in our High-Reliability Care Solutions (HRC) practice, aligned to Performance Transformation line of business. This colleague will be instrumental in our medical staff bylaws and peer review work as well as in other quality, safety, and regulatory work across HRC.

Engagement Managers are integral members of our consulting teams, leading Analysts, Associate Consultants and Consultants on projects with healthcare provider clients typically spanning 3-6 months in duration. Within our HRC practice, we have several offerings all focused on improving quality, safety, and reliability. We are seeking an Engagement Manager to work on Bylaws, Peer Review, Rules & Regulations projects primarily, but also support the practice in our other areas (regulatory compliance, clinical quality, and patient safety).

Our typical Bylaws, Peer Review, Rules & Regulations engagements bring together colleagues from across the firm (e.g., Clinical, Greeley, HRC - Compliance) to deliver comprehensive and sustainable enterprise transformation services to help our clients meet their clinical, financial, and operational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the problem-solving process and day-to-day management of engagement teams, including overseeing teams’ analysis and deliverables, often coordinating with subcontractors as well as consulting team members.

  • Apply thought leadership to client engagements, generating actionable insights that drive meaningful improvement for the firm’s clients, developing frameworks and approaches with broad potential impact

  • Build and maintain client relationships drawing upon medical staff services, peer review, and accreditation knowledge and insights to address issues within and beyond the scope of specific consulting engagements.

  • Create sophisticated, compelling communications that motivate clients to action.

  • Act as a coach and mentor to junior staff, rapidly developing their skills and knowledge through an apprenticeship-based development model.

  • Help build the firm’s portfolio of business through support of client proposals, participation in industry events, and other marketing activities.

  • Contribute to firm initiatives focused on talent (e.g., recruiting, training), knowledge (e.g., IP development, white papers), and other core areas.

  • Research trends and provide guidance about regulatory and accreditation requirements and best practices for medical staff bylaws, rules, and regulations.

  • Ability to translate regulatory and accreditation requirements for medical staff into work products.

  • Support client engagements across HRC service offerings, with opportunities to contribute to Compliance, Quality & Safety, and other practice areas based on business needs.

Qualifications and Desired Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience working with medical staffs and/or in medical staff services on operational initiatives, including review and revision of medical staff bylaws, developing medical staff policies and procedures, and/or supporting medical staff committees (e.g., Medical Executive Committee, Credentials Committee, Peer Review Committee, etc.)

  • Minimum of 3+ years managing others

  • Experience in leading comprehensive engagements or leading work teams within the overall engagement

  • Experience in medical staff services

  • A strong understanding of medical executive committee meetings, bylaws and medical staff governance documents and processes, credentialing and privileging, and general medical staff operations

  • Experience facilitating internal and external meetings.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with overlapping timelines while effectively balancing competing priorities and deadlines.

  • Preferred: Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS), Certified Professional Medical Services Management (CPMSM), or related medical staff services certification

  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills

  • Superior communicator able to convey insights in a way that motivates clients to action, both verbally and in presentations and proposals.

  • Strong people leader, adept at managing team’s work while developing colleagues’ capabilities

  • Desirable: regulatory compliance, patient quality, and clinical experience and demonstrated flexibility to support multiple HRC service offerings, serving as an Engagement Manager on Compliance or Quality & Safety engagements as business needs require.

  • Ability to work collaboratively under tight deadlines and while managing multiple priorities

  • Advanced skills in MS Excel, Access, Teams, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to travel up to 25-50%

  • Passion for materially improving the delivery of healthcare in the world.
