About this Job: General Summary of Position
Responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process in the Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) services. Coordinates and ensures that all necessary medical information is obtained and all preoperative requirements are completed prior to the day of surgery. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Medical Group Anesthesia's (MMGA) philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Clinical Practice: Efficiently completes evidence-based nursing care supporting the physiological psychosocial spiritual cultural and developmental needs of the patients during the pre-anesthesia patient assessment and pre-surgical clearance optimization.
  • Clinical Practice: Coordinates and provides clinical care by proficiently navigating PAT technology platform (currently Twistle) and electronic medical record (EMR) system in compliance with clinical guidelines. Leveraging the PAT technology platform to identify triage and process patient inquiries accurately and efficiently in accordance with the established PAT workflow.
  • Clinical Practice: Accurately captures and records pertinent health data from the medical record patient medical history questionnaire and/or patient interview into appropriate EMR power forms. Effectively identifies anesthesia risk in advance of surgery; applies established algorithms to determine necessity of specialized evaluations preoperative blood tests and/or diagnostic imaging to create a problem-based nursing assessment. When necessary proficiently transition patient care to Anesthesia Advance Practice Provider (APP) or physician to further evaluate risk need for specialty consults and appropriateness for anesthesia thereby minimizing day-of-surgery cancellations.
  • Clinical Practice: Consistently demonstrates effective documentation practices develops strategies to ensure complete patient care documentation and provides constructive feedback opportunities to improve departmental workflow.
  • Communication: Facilitates collaboration through effective communication with PAT team members and from other disciplines. Interfaces with external medical offices and provides appropriate information to obtain patient medical records or assist the patient with scheduling required pre-operative testing.
  • Communication: Reviews and confirms understanding of extensive patient instructions to assist with setting realistic expectations and preparing the patient for day of surgery. Follows up on patients who do not complete required electronic pre-anesthesia questionnaires/records and supports them as necessary.
  • Communication: Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Education: Incorporates evidence-based practice and research into patient care delivery.
  • Education: Participates in professional development activities.
  • Education: Provides support and engages with new associates on departmental technology updates and workflow initiatives.
  • Leadership: Oversees the clinical associates within the PAT services and supports them with ongoing education problem solving and escalation of concerns. Demonstrates advocacy and support on behalf of interprofessional teams and patients.
  • Leadership: Supports and contributes to the unit department and organization goals inclusive of the mission vision and values.
  • Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve the environment of care and working relationships among all levels of staff.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate in developing and revising workflows to meet changing patient population requirements.
  • Provides emotional support and extensive patient education to assist in setting realistic preoperative expectations and prepare patients for the day of surgery.
  • Provides relationship-based care that promotes continuous consistent efficient and accountable delivery of nursing care using the nursing process.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required and
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher preferred
    Experience
    • 1-2 years Pre-operative or medical/surgical care experience. Experience with Cerner electronic medical record (EMR) is preferred. Progressively more responsible job-related nursing experience preferably supporting multi-site coverage from one location preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current RN Licensure in the District of Columbia Maryland or Virginia as required by work location(s) Upon Hire required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    This position has a hiring range of : USD $89,065.00 - USD $162,801.00 /Yr.
