We are looking for a VMware Virtualisation Engineer to operate and evolve EUMETSAT's virtualisation platforms supporting mission-critical workloads.
Background:
The Infrastructure and Data Division (I2D), within EUMETSAT's Technical and Scientific Support Department (TSS) operates and evolves the Multi-Mission IT Computing (MIC) environment providing 24x7 Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms, container management platforms, virtualised environments and software-defined storage for EUMETSAT’s operational ground-segment infrastructure.
You will join a dynamic team responsible for operating, maintaining, securing and evolving the MIC infrastructure as it progresses towards hybrid, container-based, automation-driven and AI-assisted operations.
You shall support:
- Operationally administer the virtualisation infrastructure (VMware vSphere) and related compute and storage resources
- Perform cluster configuration, lifecycle upgrades, HA/DRS management and VM provisioning
- Administer enterprise server and blade-chassis hardware supporting the virtualisation layer
- Plan and execute hypervisor and firmware updates and security hardening of virtualisation layers
- Diagnose and resolve incidents across virtualised and physical infrastructure
- Support high-availability, resilience and disaster-recovery configurations, including failover testing
Skills and experiences
- Expert VMware vSphere administration, including cluster configuration, lifecycle upgrades, HA/DRS and VM provisioning
- Experience administering enterprise hardware platforms (Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Cisco UCS, Lenovo ThinkSystem)
- Hands-on experience configuring and managing blade-chassis infrastructure, including Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnects and IO modules
- Ability to diagnose and resolve incidents in cloud and virtualised infrastructure
- Advanced Linux administration expertise and automation scripting (Bash, Python)
- Knowledge of containerisation (Docker) and Kubernetes orchestration is an advantage
- Familiarity with OpenStack and hybrid-cloud integration is an advantage
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline from an accredited university, with at least 5 years of relevant experience
- Effective written and verbal communication in English
- Ability to document and maintain technical baselines, operational procedures and architecture diagrams
- Knowledge of ITIL service management processes (incident, change, problem management)
- Willingness to participate in the standby / on-call rotation and, occasionally, in weekend, public-holiday or late-night interventions as agreed in advance

Working Location
This is a full-time position, located either at our customer EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany or delivered off-site from Germany, Czech Republic or Romania, starting in December 2026 onwards. Standby / call-out support and provision of support to critical operations may sometimes be required.
