Job description

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join DSPolitical’s highly collaborative Engineering team. The Senior Data Engineer will be the key resource responsible for developing and maintaining DSPolitical’s reporting stack including our ingestion pipelines, data warehouse architecture, and visualization tools as well as bespoke report generation and delivery. This role will also be responsible for managing several other data services and data operations workflows including our voter file instance.  The ideal candidate is a software-minded architect who cares about process and documentation and looks for resilient and scalable solutions.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Designs and implements system architectures for a growing reporting platform and other data services.
  • Maintains our reporting pipelines and other automations
  • Builds internal and external dashboards and analytics views
  • Maintains Redshift instance and associated web services for operational use in our web applications
  • Provides guidance on how to effectively use our data for both analytics and operations, working with other departments to understand their needs and design solutions.

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • 6+ years of professional experience in data engineering
  • Strong commitment to collaboration and mentorship
  • Expertise in SQL 
  • Expertise in database design and performance issues.
  • Experience in a scripting language like Python or Node.
  • Strong understanding of the nuances of running production services including observability and alerting.
  • Strong commitment to understanding business needs and translating those into technical systems
  • Strong experience working in a highly collaborative environment. 
  • Ability to effectively organize technical work in collaboration with other stakeholders.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience working in Snowflake and AWS
    • Experience with data visualization platforms such as Tableau

Office Hours

This position is based in Washington, DC however, we are open to remote work in other states. We will be working on a hybrid basis with many team members working entirely from home. Work hours are consistently 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, with the expectation that evening and weekend work will be required as necessary.
