Job description

As the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization, Breakthrough T1D helps make everyday life with T1D better while driving toward cures. We invest in the most promising research to turn ideas into life-changing therapies and devices. We work with government, regulatory officials, and insurance companies to address issues that impact the T1D community -- breaking through barriers that limit access to care worldwide. We provide resources and guidance that makes it easier to live and thrive with T1D. This is more than a moment -- we're empowering a movement for the T1D community. Share your support and help educate and empower individuals facing type 1 diabetes.

Our mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life changing breakthroughs to treat, prevent and ultimately, cure T1D and its complications. Always, we are guided by a single purpose: As we drive towards curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.

About the Role

Breakthrough T1D is seeking a seasoned, forward-thinking Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) who brings both insight and influence to the table. This is not a traditional HR generalist role, it is a strategic role in partnering with leaders to align the organizational and operational strategy with the people strategy.  The HRBP will play a critical role by advising leaders on workforce strategy, talent optimization, employee engagement and change leadership while driving a performance culture.

As a trusted thought partner to senior leaders, you’ll help shape workforce design, accelerate team performance, and cultivate the conditions for engagement and equity across the enterprise.

This role is on a hybrid (New York office) work model but open to remote.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Business Partnership & Organizational Design (25%)

  • Operate as a strategic advisor to senior leaders across Breakthrough T1D’s field organization, aligning talent strategies with Breakthrough T1D’s mission, values, and long-range goals. This role covers an estimated employee base of 125 over 2 operating divisions consisting of 10 territories across the Northeast and the Midwest.
  • Translate business needs into actionable people strategies, including workforce planning, change enablement, and organizational design.
  • Partner with department leaders to identify capability gaps, inform team structures, and design scalable solutions to support growth, integration, and transformation.
  • Lead strategic talent discussions tied to performance, succession, and organizational growth.

Employee Relations, Risk Management & Coaching (25%)

  • Provide strategic risk mitigation by managing complex employee relations cases with discretion and consistency.
  • Partner with legal and compliance functions to ensure decisions align with policy, regulation, and risk posture.
  • Act as a coach to leaders on sensitive interpersonal dynamics, team cohesion, and feedback delivery.
  • Influence how leaders show up—with empathy, consistency, and alignment to Breakthrough T1D values.

HR Program Stewardship & Execution (25%)

  • Serve as the critical conduit between COEs (e.g., Talent, Culture & Belonging, Total Rewards, HR Operations and Talent Acquisition) and field leadership, ensuring HR programs are contextually relevant and strategically deployed.
  • Champion and localize key HR initiatives (e.g., compensation planning, succession planning, leadership development, etc) based on business readiness and maturity.
  • Equip leaders to implement and reinforce HR initiatives in ways that enhance both compliance and culture.

Talent Planning, Performance & Culture Enablement (20%)

  • Regularly provide coaching/guidance on skill and professional development, career pathing and leveling and sensitive employment situations. Guide field leadership teams through talent review discussions; ensure alignment between talent investments and organizational priorities.
  • Consult on goal setting, performance calibration, and talent development to drive a high-accountability, high-impact culture.
  • Use key metrics and data to proactively diagnose root causes and co-create action plans with field leadership.
  • Help drive and foster a positive, inclusive work environment

Culture & Change Leadership (5%)

  • Be a force multiplier for culture: reinforce our values, champion inclusivity, and foster resilience through transitions and growth.
  • Support leaders and teams through change initiatives such as integrations, reorganizations, or strategic pivots, serving as a stabilizing presence and strategic guide.
  • Act as a culture translator—helping the organization maintain coherence across remote and distributed teams.

What You Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, Business, or related field
  • 8-10 years of progressive HRBP, talent strategy, or organizational development experience
  • Deep understanding of the HRBP function as a strategic lever, not just a support function
  • Strong ability to coach, challenge, and influence senior leaders using data and insight
  • Expertise in employee relations, HR compliance, and employment law
  • Travel requirement is approximately between 15%-20%. Travel will include visits to field offices & locations, fundraising events, strategy planning meetings & conferences.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree or relevant certification (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR)
  • Experience in mission-driven or nonprofit organizations
  • Fluency with HRIS platforms such as Workday
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity, complexity, and matrixed stakeholder environments

Success Profile

You are:

  • A systems thinker who connects the dots between talent, strategy, and structure
  • Comfortable with dissent and challenge when it leads to better outcomes
  • Both empathetic and direct in coaching conversations
  • Relentlessly curious and always scanning for patterns and levers
  • Adept at managing through influence rather than authority
