Strategy and consulting has shifted dramatically toward remote delivery. The pandemic proved that strategic advisory, transformation consulting, and management consulting can be delivered without constant on-site presence. For senior consultants and strategists with 10+ years of experience, the remote market is strong, both in traditional consulting firms adapting to hybrid/remote models and in the growing fractional/independent consulting space.
At the junior and mid-level associate level, competition is high. But senior principals, directors, and partners face less competition, particularly in specialized domains. The least competitive areas are digital transformation strategy, AI/data strategy, and operational restructuring. Independent and fractional consulting is growing rapidly as senior professionals build portfolio careers.
Senior consultants and managers (5 to 10 years) have increasingly remote roles at consulting firms. Principal and Director levels (10+ years) have strong remote prospects, particularly for domain specialists. Partner-track roles at traditional firms may still require periodic client on-site, but the baseline is now remote. Independent consulting is fully remote by definition.
Firm pedigree filtering is an implicit challenge. Companies often filter for specific consulting firm backgrounds (McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, Accenture). Industry and capability specialization also matters: strategy, operations, technology, and human capital are treated as distinct tracks. Senior consultants should position around their domain specialty and demonstrated client outcomes rather than firm name alone.
