Iran has a large, well-educated professional class with particular depth in engineering, software development, mathematics, and medicine. Iranian professionals working internationally, or Iranian nationals living abroad with valid work authorization in a third country, regularly access global remote roles. However, for professionals ordinarily resident in Iran, the practical landscape for international remote employment is heavily constrained by US and EU sanctions regimes. US employers are broadly prohibited from hiring or paying individuals ordinarily resident in Iran under the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (ITSR). Non-US employers face fewer blanket restrictions but still encounter payment infrastructure barriers. The primary constraint for US-employer remote roles is legal: US companies are generally prohibited from contracting with or paying individuals ordinarily resident in Iran under ITSR sanctions. The clearest path for professionals who want to access international remote roles is to do so from outside Iran, in a country where their residency status does not trigger sanctions prohibitions. Iranian nationals with residency or work authorization in Turkey, UAE, Germany, Canada, or other countries are able to work for international employers without the Iran-specific compliance barrier. Within Iran, non-US employers in jurisdictions with fewer restrictions are a more viable starting point, though payment solutions remain a practical challenge that requires case-by-case navigation.
Building and maintaining a strong, internationally visible professional profile is the highest-value preparation step regardless of current location constraints. Iranian professionals who are considering international relocation should develop their English communication skills, build platform presence on LinkedIn and GitHub or equivalent professional networks, and stay current with internationally recognized technology and methodology standards. The skills gap is rarely the issue for Iranian professionals who pursue international roles from a compliant location. The positioning and visibility gaps are more commonly the limiting factors.
