Accounts payable is increasingly remote-friendly as invoice processing, vendor management, and payment systems move to cloud-based platforms. For senior AP professionals with 10+ years of experience, the opportunity is in AP automation leadership, process optimization, and vendor relationship management, functions where strategic oversight adds value beyond transactional processing.
At the transactional processing level, yes, and these roles are declining due to automation. At the AP management, automation leadership, and P2P (procure-to-pay) strategy levels, competition is low. Companies implementing AP automation platforms (Coupa, SAP Ariba, Bill.com) actively seek experienced professionals who can oversee the transition.
AP managers and leads (7+ years) have strong remote prospects. AP Director roles are available remotely at mid-sized companies. At the VP level, AP typically rolls into broader finance leadership. The strongest remote path for senior AP professionals is toward procure-to-pay strategy or finance operations leadership.
Platform filtering is the primary issue. Companies filter for specific AP systems (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Coupa, Bill.com), and experience with one does not automatically match another in ATS systems. Senior AP professionals should list all platforms explicitly and emphasize process outcomes alongside system names.
