Job description

JOB TITLE:    Graph Architect (No C2C, only W2)
LOCATION:    Remote from the USA
INDUSTRY:     Pharmaceutical

JOB SUMMARY:  Theoris is seeking a highly skilled Senior Graph Database Engineer to support advanced data modeling and architecture initiatives, including Connected Labels and knowledge graph–driven solutions. This role requires deep, hands-on expertise with graph databases—particularly Neo4j or Amazon Neptune—and strong experience designing, querying, and integrating graph data within an AWS-heavy ecosystem. The ideal candidate will also have exposure to graph + vector (GraphRAG) patterns supporting modern AI-enabled use cases.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Architect and maintain scalable graph data models representing complex relationships, including many‑to‑many associations, hierarchies, and connected labeling patterns. Translate traditional entity‑relationship models into optimized graph schemas.
  • Write and optimize advanced Cypher (Neo4j) and/or SPARQL queries, including deep traversals, pattern matching, aggregations, and pathfinding, ensuring high performance and low latency.
  • Design and evolve enterprise knowledge graphs, including ontology design, semantic modeling, and connected-label structures to enable intelligent navigation, reasoning, and reuse of data.
  • Configure and manage Amazon Neptune clusters, including writer/reader endpoints, replicas, networking (VPC isolation), IAM-based authentication, and security best practices.
  • Design and operate ETL pipelines to populate graph databases using S3 bulk loads (CSV/RDF), AWS Glue, Lambda, Kafka, or streaming sources. Leverage Neptune Streams for change data capture where applicable.
  • Design for query efficiency and scale, avoiding supernode issues, implementing appropriate indexing strategies, monitoring query plans, and supporting temporal/versioned graph use cases.
  • Build and maintain Python‑based REST APIs (e.g., FastAPI) that expose graph data to downstream applications. Integrate graph services with enterprise systems and AI platforms.
  • Support hybrid vector + graph architectures, enabling GraphRAG and AI‑driven reasoning by combining embeddings with graph traversal for enhanced contextual retrieval and inference.
  • Partner with data engineers, application developers, AI/ML teams, and business stakeholders to define requirements, validate models, and ensure graph solutions align with business and domain needs.
  • Establish standards for graph modeling, query development, versioning, and documentation. Support compliance, auditability, and long‑term maintainability of graph‑based systems.
  • Utilize tools such as Neptune Workbench (Jupyter) or Neo4j tooling to support exploratory analysis, prototyping, and validation of graph models and queries.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Deep expertise in at least one graph database platform: Neo4j or Amazon Neptune
  • Strong command of Cypher (Neo4j) for complex traversals, pattern matching, and aggregations
  • Experience with SPARQL for RDF, semantic, or ontology-based workloads
  • Advanced graph data modeling, including nodes, edges, properties, and directionality
  • Schema design expertise, including decisions on when to use graph vs relational vs document databases
  • Index design and optimization, including native graph indexes, full‑text indexes, and composite indexes

  • Translating traditional entity‑relationship (ER) models into optimized graph models
  • Efficient handling of many‑to‑many relationships in graph structures
  • Designing for query performance, including strategies to avoid supernode and hotspot issues
  • Experience with versioned and temporal graphs to track changes over time
  • Designing and implementing Connected Labels and knowledge graph patterns
  • Experience with ontology design and semantic modeling

  • Hands‑on experience with Amazon Neptune cluster setup, including writer/reader endpoints and replicas
  • Bulk data loading into Neptune from Amazon S3 (CSV and/or RDF formats)
  • Working knowledge of Neptune Streams for change data capture and downstream processing
  • Implementing VPC isolation, IAM authentication, and secure access for Neptune
  • Experience with Neptune Analytics, including combined vector and graph query workloads
  • Familiarity with Neptune Workbench (Jupyter-based querying and exploration)

  • Experience with Python graph libraries such as:
    • py2neo
    • Neo4j Python Driver
    • gremlinpython
  • Building graph-backed REST APIs, ideally using FastAPI
  • Designing and maintaining ETL pipelines feeding graph databases using:
    • AWS Glue
    • AWS Lambda
    • Kafka or other streaming solutions
  • Exposure to Vector + Graph (GraphRAG) architectures to support AI/LLM-driven applications

  • Preferred:  Experience supporting AI-enabled knowledge graphs
  • Preferred:  Familiarity with semantic search, embeddings, or hybrid vector-graph queries
  • Preferred:  Background in regulated or enterprise data environments
  • Preferred:  Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering and data teams
