Directing the day-to-day accounting across an international non-profit group operating across five jurisdictions, this position safeguards organisational financial integrity and drives regulatory compliance. The primary outcome expected from this role is to translate complex accounting data into clear, plain-language insights that empower executive leadership, the Board, and international donors to make informed strategic decisions.
Working 40 hours per week in a full-time, home-based remote setup, the position requires flexibility to work across UK, European, East African, and Asian time zones, alongside occasional local and international travel. The role carries full financial responsibility for UK and Africa entities while managing and consolidating financial operations across Netherlands, Maldives, and Indonesia entities.
This role involves direct financial management and bookkeeping, managing multi-currency treasury and foreign exchange exposure, leading statutory audit preparations, preparing donor compliance reports, and providing line management and quality control to in-country finance staff.
Perform full financial management and bookkeeping directly for UK and Africa entities.
Lead financial management for Maldives and Indonesia entities, reviewing and consolidating local processing performed by in-country direct reports.
Provide line management, training, and quality control for finance staff based in the Maldives and Indonesia.
Oversee financial review and group consolidation in collaboration with an external finance consultant for Netherlands operations.
Produce monthly visual dashboards for executive leadership and the Board of Trustees highlighting cash runway, budget variance, and burn rates.
Translate accounting detail into clear, plain-language summaries and flag critical financial risks using red/amber/green status indicators.
Produce consolidated monthly and annual group management reporting alongside entity-level financial statements.
Design annual programme-by-programme and entity-by-entity budgets, providing quarterly forecast updates and funding scenario modelling.
Execute multi-currency treasury management, bank reconciliations, cash flow monitoring, and cross-border funding transfers.
Maintain strict alignment with non-profit regulatory, charity, and tax-exemption requirements across five legal jurisdictions (UK, Netherlands, South Africa, Maldives, Indonesia).
Lead annual statutory accounts preparation, build comprehensive audit packages, and liaise with external auditors across all jurisdictions.
Track restricted and unrestricted funding, oversee grant compliance, and prepare audited financial statements and reports for international donors.
Ensure group-wide payroll processing is completed on or before the 21st of each month in compliance with local statutory tax laws.
Qualified accountant (e.g. CA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or an equivalent internationally recognised professional accounting qualification) OR qualified through extensive senior accounting experience.
Minimum 5 years of senior financial management experience.
Demonstrable experience managing financial operations across multiple legal jurisdictions or countries (e.g. within an international charity, NGO, or multinational organisation).
Experience preparing and submitting financial reports against grant and donor conditions, formats, timelines, and audit requirements.
Proven experience managing or supervising finance staff remotely across different countries and cultures.
Experience with advanced financial reporting, data visualisation, and forecasting platforms.
Practical knowledge of foreign currency exposure, multi-currency accounting, and group/consolidated accounting structures.
Solid understanding of statutory reporting and liaising with external auditors across jurisdictions.
Demonstrated ability to translate complex financial data into clear, plain-language insights verbally and in writing for non-finance audiences.
Desirable Requirements
10+ years of financial management experience.
Prior financial experience within the non-profit / NGO / charity sector.
Knowledge of finance, tax, and payroll regulations in the UK, South Africa, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and/or Maldives.
Experience building visual reporting tools or financial dashboards.
Member of a recognised professional accounting body (e.g. SAICA, SAIPA, CIMA, ACCA, or an international equivalent).
