Avalara is building the future of tax compliance infrastructure, operating at a massive scale that processes billions of transactions for hundreds of thousands of customers globally. As a Technical Program Manager in Engineering, you will bring disciplined, data-informed, and AI-enabled program leadership to our most critical initiatives.

You’ll act as a force multiplier for engineering velocity, connecting strategy to execution across our global teams spanning Product, Architecture, Platform Engineering, Security, and Cloud Operations. This role is essential to our ability to ship at scale with predictability and visibility, as you will build the analytical infrastructure that makes delivery reliable and communicate complex technical realities with the clarity needed for confident leadership decisions.

You will join the Engineering Operations team, reporting to the Sr Director, Technical Program Management. This role is #LI-Remote

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:
  • Drive end-to-end planning, execution, dependency mapping, and delivery of mission-critical, multi-team engineering programs.
  • Proactively surface hidden technical assumptions, resolve complex inter-service dependencies, and evaluate architectural trade-offs to sustain delivery predictability and unblock teams before risks become incidents.
  • Own milestone governance and escalation frameworks that keep programs aligned across global time zones and competing priorities.
  • Design and optimize Jira ecosystems (filters, JQL, Advanced Roadmaps, boards) to enforce rigorous SDLC hygiene and provide clear operational visibility.
  • Prototype and build custom, interactive dashboards and analytical tools using Python, Streamlit, or low-code platforms, leveraging AI-assisted development to accelerate the creation of reporting infrastructure.
  • Synthesize multi-layered technical complexity into crisp, executive-ready narratives and roadmaps for VP and C-level audiences.
  • Champion the adoption of cutting-edge AI developer tools, intelligent agents, and LLM-assisted workflows to structurally improve planning, analysis, and execution velocity.
  • Raise the bar for execution quality by identifying meaningful AI opportunities tied to delivery efficiency, and ensuring AI is applied responsibly, securely, and ethically.
What You'll Need to be Successful:
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 8 to 12+ years of Technical Program Management experience in fast-paced, product-based cloud or SaaS environments.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing multi-team organizational initiatives across global time zones, with strong experience aligning US and India stakeholders.
  • Deep fluency with Jira and Agile/Flow metrics, including expert-level ability to design JQL queries, CFD/Kanban workflows, and delivery KPIs.
  • Hands-on experience prototyping and building dashboards, scripts, and data tools using Python, Streamlit, JavaScript, or low-code frameworks.
  • Familiarity with modern AI coding assistants (such as Cursor, Claude Code, or GitLab Copilot) for personal productivity, automated workflow generation, and applied AI problem-solving.
  • Exceptional executive storytelling skills with a proven ability to influence senior leadership through clear, structured, and visually compelling communication.
  • Strong technical acumen with the ability to evaluate architectural trade-offs, understand API design, and reason about scaling constraints in distributed SaaS systems.
  • High standards of quality, ownership, and accountability, with a demonstrated ability to simplify complexity, drive measurable outcomes, and elevate the performance and AI capability of the teams around you.
Avalara is an AI-first Company:
