Job Summary
This position will be a member of a small team responsible for engineering, managing, securing, and automating *** server operating system platforms across public and private cloud environments. The role is focused on full lifecycle Server OS management, including image creation, OS configuration management, patching, compliance, file share management, infrastructure automation, and integration with enterprise IT service management platforms.
This role requires experience with modern infrastructure automation and platform engineering practices, including Infrastructure as Code, configuration management, golden image management, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud landing zone enablement. Key technologies may include Terraform, Packer, Ansible, Chef, Azure DevOps, GitHub pipelines, ServiceNow, CMDB integrations, AWS, Azure, Linux, and Windows Server environments.
The ideal candidate will help mature and automate end-to-end server provisioning and lifecycle operations, ensuring systems are standardized, secure, supportable, and aligned with *** operational and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Server OS Lifecycle Management
Engineer, manage, and support standardized server operating system platforms across cloud and on-premises environments.
Support lifecycle activities including provisioning, configuration, patching, compliance validation, and retirement of server assets.
Maintain OS standards for Linux and Windows Server platforms, including configuration baselines, security settings, and operational requirements.
Collaborate with application teams, infrastructure teams, security teams, and product owners to ensure server platforms meet business and technical needs.
2. Image Management and Golden Image Automation
Build, maintain, and publish standardized server images using tools such as Packer.
Manage golden image pipelines for public cloud, private cloud, and virtualized environments.
Ensure images meet *** standards for security, compliance, performance, monitoring, logging, and operational readiness.
Continuously improve image creation processes through automation, testing, and pipeline integration.
3. OS Configuration Management
Design, implement, and maintain OS configuration management using tools such as Ansible and Chef.
Develop and maintain playbooks, cookbooks, roles, recipes, and reusable automation modules.
Enforce standardized configurations across server environments.
Automate remediation of configuration drift where appropriate.
Partner with security and operations teams to align configuration baselines with hardening and compliance requirements.
4. Patch Management and Compliance
Support enterprise server patch management processes for Linux and Windows Server platforms.
Automate patch deployment, validation, reporting, and exception handling where possible.
Track patch compliance and collaborate with application/product owners to remediate gaps.
Support vulnerability remediation efforts related to operating systems, packages, agents, and platform dependencies.
Maintain documentation and reporting for patch cycles, standards, and operational procedures.
5. Infrastructure as Code and Automation Enablement
Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and related tooling.
Build reusable Terraform modules for server provisioning, storage, networking, security, and cloud platform integrations.
Enable end-to-end automation of server provisioning, configuration, registration, patching, monitoring, and lifecycle workflows.
Integrate infrastructure automation with CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar platforms.
Promote repeatable, auditable, and scalable infrastructure delivery practices.
6. Cloud Platform and Landing Zone Support
Support server platform services within AWS and Azure cloud environments.
Assist with AWS landing zone and Azure landing zone management related to compute, identity, networking, storage, tagging, policy, and governance.
Support automation patterns for cloud-based server provisioning and lifecycle management.
Collaborate with cloud architecture, security, and operations teams to maintain secure and compliant cloud infrastructure standards.
7. SMB and Centralized File Share Management
Manage and support centralized file share services, including SMB-based file shares.
Support file share lifecycle management, including provisioning, permissions, access reviews, capacity management, and operational support.
Work with stakeholders to ensure file services are secure, resilient, and aligned with business needs.
Support cloud-based and hybrid file service solutions where applicable.
8. ServiceNow, CMDB, and ITSM Automation
Support automation and integration with ServiceNow for server provisioning, lifecycle management, incident/change processes, and CMDB updates.
Develop or support workflows that improve accuracy and timeliness of CMDB data.
Automate server registration, ownership tracking, environment tagging, and operational metadata updates.
Partner with ITSM and platform teams to improve service catalog and request automation capabilities.
9. CI/CD Pipeline Development and Automation Integration
Build and maintain automation pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.
Integrate Terraform, Packer, Ansible, Chef, testing, validation, and deployment workflows into automated pipelines.
Support source control, branching, pull request, and code review practices for infrastructure automation.
Improve reliability, repeatability, and visibility of platform automation processes.
10. Documentation, Standards, and Collaboration
Create and maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks, standards, and process diagrams.
Participate in design reviews, change planning, incident response, and root cause analysis.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve platform reliability, security, and supportability.
Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and modernize server platform operations.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience in server platform engineering, infrastructure automation, systems administration, cloud infrastructure, or related technical roles.
- Experience supporting enterprise infrastructure in hybrid cloud environments preferred.
Technical Skills
- Experience managing Linux server platforms such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux, or similar distributions.
- Experience with Windows Server administration and SMB file share management preferred.
- Strong understanding of server OS lifecycle management, including image management, configuration management, patching, compliance, and operational support.
- Experience building and managing server images using Packer or similar image automation tools.
- Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible and/or Chef.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, especially Terraform.
- Experience with CI/CD platforms such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar tooling.
- Familiarity with AWS infrastructure services and cloud platform patterns.
- Familiarity with Azure infrastructure services and landing zone concepts preferred.
- Experience with ServiceNow, CMDB processes, ITSM workflows, or automation integrations preferred.
- Understanding of OS-level permissions, identity integration, access controls, and security hardening.
- Ability to script and automate using Bash, PowerShell, Python, or similar languages.
- Strong Python skills preferred.
- Experience with patch management, vulnerability remediation, compliance reporting, and operational governance.
- Understanding of monitoring, logging, backup, disaster recovery, and operational readiness concepts.
