Role Purpose

Basketball England is seeking motivated graduate Sports Therapists, Sport Rehabilitators and Physiotherapists to join its bank practitioner workforce.

The role provides an opportunity for early-career practitioners to gain experience within a national governing body and performance basketball environment while supporting athlete health, availability and performance.

Practitioners will work within Basketball England's clinical governance framework, professional scope of practice and individual level of competence, with appropriate supervision and support available.

Key Responsibilities

The Bank Graduate Practitioner will:

• Assess and support the management of musculoskeletal and acute sporting injuries within their scope of practice and competence.
• Deliver evidence-informed treatment and progressive exercise-based rehabilitation.
• Monitor athlete response to rehabilitation and basketball activity and contribute to return-to-performance processes.
• Provide medical support at Basketball England training sessions, camps, tournaments and competitions as deployed.
• Provide appropriate immediate care and follow venue/event Emergency Action Plans when required.
• Recognise presentations requiring further investigation or senior clinical input and escalate appropriately.
• Communicate athlete availability, restrictions and relevant clinical information effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical records using Basketball England's designated systems.
• Follow Basketball England policies relating to clinical governance, safeguarding, confidentiality, concussion management and athlete welfare.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and work collaboratively with athletes, coaches and performance staff.
• Engage with Basketball England induction, practitioner development and relevant CPD activities.
• Graduate practitioners will not be expected to independently manage complex or high-risk clinical presentations beyond their level of competence.

Person Specification

Essential

Applicants must:

• Hold, or be completing with eligibility to practise before deployment, a relevant BSc Sports Therapy, BSc Sport Rehabilitation, BSc Physiotherapy, or equivalent qualification accepted by Basketball England.
• Hold appropriate professional registration or membership relevant to their profession, where applicable.
• Hold a recognised sports trauma/pre-hospital emergency care qualification appropriate to the sporting environment or be willing to obtain an approved qualification before athlete-facing deployment.
• Hold, or be willing to obtain before deployment, the required DBS clearance and safeguarding training.
• Demonstrate sound foundational knowledge of musculoskeletal assessment, sports injury management and exercise-based rehabilitation.
• Understand basic return-to-sport principles and recognise when clinical escalation is required.
• Demonstrate clear communication, appropriate clinical record keeping and effective multidisciplinary working.
• Understand professional scope of practice and recognise their own limitations.
• Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, willingness to learn and a commitment to athlete welfare.

Desirable

• Previous experience in basketball or another team/court sport.
• Experience providing pitch-side or courtside medical support.
• Experience working with adolescent or talent-development athletes.
• Experience delivering exercise-based rehabilitation.
• Familiarity with concussion management, athlete monitoring, return-to-performance testing or electronic medical record systems.
• Strength and conditioning knowledge or qualifications.
• Basketball-specific experience is not essential, and otherwise suitable graduate practitioners are encouraged to apply.

Professional Standards & Safeguarding

Appointment is subject to Basketball England's safer recruitment and onboarding requirements, which may include DBS clearance, safeguarding training, satisfactory references and verification of qualifications and professional status.

Practitioners must maintain appropriate professional registration/membership and practise within their competence at all times. Deployment will reflect practitioner competence and experience, athlete population, event risk and the level of supervision available.

Athlete welfare and safety must take precedence over competitive considerations.

The bank practitioner programme provides a structured entry point into Basketball England's practitioner pathway. Practitioners will have opportunities to develop experience within performance basketball, receive feedback and engage with relevant professional development activities.

Practitioners who demonstrate consistently high standards of clinical practice, professionalism and development may be considered for further opportunities within Basketball England, subject to organisational requirements.
