Position Overview

The Director, Tax leads the Tax Managers, and potentially Tax Associates and Tax Senior Associates, and their teams and is accountable for the quality and timeliness of the private-foundation tax returns those teams produce. Serving as coordinator for a set of complex clients, the Director reviews the most complex returns, provides formal training on complex topics, partners with the Legal Department on tax policy, and owns interdepartmental initiatives and new-process development. This leader develops Managers, ensures tax-season readiness, and continuously improves how the team works.

Key Responsibilities

Preparation, Review & Quality Assurance (40%)

  • Review level 3, 4, and 5 returns, and review level 1 and 2 returns for training purposes
  • Prepare the most complex level 4 and 5 returns
  • Review estimates, extensions, and Minimum Distribution Requirement (MDR) calculations
  • Review responses to IRS notices and tax-authority correspondence

Leadership & Talent Development (30%)

  • Lead and develop Tax Managers, Tax Senior Associates, and Tax Associates as direct reports, including performance management and coaching
  • Provide formal training on specific complex tax topics
  • Oversee resource allocation and tax-season readiness across teams

Client & Cross-functional Leadership (20%)

  • Serve as coordinator for a set of complex clients and maintain client relationships
  • Assist with Legal Department coordination on tax policies and statutes
  • Partner across departments to ensure accurate, on-time delivery

Process & Department Initiatives (20%)

  • Own interdepartmental initiatives and the building of new processes
  • Drive efficiency improvements and end-to-end process refinement
  • Lead special projects as requested by upper management

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; Master’s degree preferred; CPA required
  • 10+ years of tax experience, including multi-team or multi-manager leadership
  • Deep technical knowledge of private-foundation tax (990-PF, 990-T, foreign filings, estimates, MDR)
  • Proven ability to review complex returns and develop Managers and preparers
  • Strong process orientation with a record of building new processes and interdepartmental initiatives
  • Mastery of computer and web-based products including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and Salesforce; GoSystem Tax RS preferred
  • Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills
