Job description

About Americanflat

Americanflat makes home décor stylish, affordable, and accessible. We're remote-first and fast-growing, with a globally distributed team that runs on lean principles, direct communication, and collaboration.

About the Role
As a Senior Accountant, you'll run the monthly close and keep our books accurate across a business that sells through Amazon (1P and 3P), Walmart, Target Plus, Shopify, and wholesale. You'll own reconciliations, inventory accounting, and balance sheet analysis under US GAAP, and you'll give our auditors and lenders clean, reviewable support.
Two things make this different from most senior accounting roles. You'll own your areas outright instead of feeding schedules upward for someone else to stand behind. And you'll be expected to use AI every day to do it.

How We Work
We run the business on AI rather than around it. The team uses it daily to research, draft, analyze, and build the small tools we'd otherwise wait on a vendor for. You won't need permission to use AI here. You'll need a view on where it belongs and where it doesn't.
You don't need to write code. Nobody here does. What matters is that AI is already part of how you work, not something you've read about.

What You'll Do

Month-End Close and US GAAP

• Prepare and post journal entries for accruals, prepaids, deferrals, and reclassifications under US GAAP
• Own assigned close tasks against a defined close calendar and deliver on schedule
• Apply revenue recognition (ASC 606) to marketplace and wholesale channels, including gross-vs-net presentation of marketplace fees, chargebacks, coop, and allowances
• Prepare supporting schedules and deliverables for external auditors
Inventory Accounting
• Reconcile inventory across 3PL warehouses, Amazon FBA, and in-transit to the GL, and chase variances to root cause
• Maintain landed cost build-up covering product cost, freight, duty, tariffs, and drayage, and support excess and slow-moving reserves
• Execute receipts, transfers, and other inventory transactions

Balance Sheet and Analysis

• Prepare monthly reconciliations for all assigned balance sheet accounts with clear, reviewable support
• Perform flux and trend analysis on balance sheet and P&L accounts, explaining the drivers behind the movement
• Identify and clear unreconciled items, stale balances, and misclassifications, and propose corrections

Ownership and Improvement

• Own your areas end to end. When a number looks wrong, we come to you, and we expect you to already know why.
• Use AI to take the manual work out of recurring close tasks: settlement files, 3PL reports, reconciliation prep, first-draft variance commentary
• Set the boundary on anything you automate: what AI produces, what you review before it posts, and how it's evidenced for the audit file. AI drafts, you sign.
• Document what you do, flag the control gaps and single points of failure, and work with Operations and Supply Chain to fix data quality upstream rather than in the GL

What We're Looking For

Experience
• 3 to 5 years of accounting experience, including a full-cycle month-end close you owned rather than assisted on
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• Working knowledge of US GAAP, including inventory and revenue recognition
• Advanced Excel and Google Sheets: pivot tables, lookups, large-volume data
• Experience with QuickBooks Desktop

AI Fluency
• You use AI daily and have built something with it on your own time. Be ready to walk us through it.
• You know where it breaks. You don't let a model invent a number, you tie output back to source data, and you don't put company financial data into unapproved tools.
• You keep up. If a better tool shipped last month, you've already tried it.

Personality
This carries as much weight as the resume. We'll take a coachable person with the right instincts over a perfect CV every time, because we can teach our systems and our close. We can't teach judgment or care.

• Coachable. You take direct feedback, apply it, and don't need to hear it twice.
• Direct. When something doesn't tie, you say so early instead of forcing it.
• You'd rather be right than done. A checked-off task and a correct account are not the same thing.

Nice to have
Amazon or Walmart settlement data, 3PL and FBA inventory systems, prior external audit support, and any AI tool you've built something real with.
