Job Description

AltaGas - Rail Specialist, Rail Operations

AltaGas is seeking a Rail Specialist to join our Rail Operations team. In this role, you'll serve as the subject matter expert for rail operations across our midstream facilities, helping to drive safe, compliant, and efficient rail movements while supporting operational excellence across North America.

Reporting to the Rail Operations Team Lead, the Rail Specialist provides technical expertise and support for rail operations across midstream facilities.

The role acts as a subject matter expert (SME) for rail movements, shunting, regulatory compliance, railway partner coordination, training, and competency management. The Rail Specialist supports the development and implementation of the Operational Management System (OMS) Rail Program while promoting standardization and operational excellence across AltaGas rail facilities.

The Rail Specialist ensures the training, qualification, and ongoing competency of rail movement operators, participates in audits and investigations, and provides field support to ensure alignment with AltaGas standards and regulatory requirements while promoting safe, compliant, consistent, and efficient rail operations.

This is a full-time remote position. While administratively based within the Rail Operations team, the majority of the role is field based, requiring frequent travel to AltaGas operating facilities by way of a combination of air travel and driving.

What You'll Do:

  • Serve as a rail SME, providing practical guidance on rail, switching (shunting), and day-to-day rail operating practices across AltaGas sites.
  • Support the Rail Program Owner/Team Lead for the implementation, sustainment, and continuous improvement of rail-related standards, procedures, and controls within the Operational Management System.
  • Review and maintain rail operating procedures, standards, training materials, and competency assessment tools.
  • Provide hands-on support for rail operations, including switching (shunting), inspections, troubleshooting, competency evaluations, and continuous improvement of existing infrastructure and practices.
  • Participate in incident investigations, operational assessments, and root cause analyses, identifying hazards and supporting mitigation actions related to rail movements and loading/offloading activities.
  • Support operating sites by providing technical guidance, training, and field mentorship related to rail movements, offloading activities, and rail yard assessments/inspections.
  • Assess qualifications for rail movement operators through competency assessments, field evaluations, and individual development planning.
  • Support regulatory inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
  • Provide rail operational support to AltaGas facilities throughout North America, including regular travel to operating sites as required.
  • Monitor, document, and report findings, development needs, and corrective actions arising from site visits and operator assessments.

What You'll Bring:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Trade certification or post-secondary education in a related field is considered an asset but is not required.
  • Experience
  • Required experience in industrial rail environments, including rail yards, rail-served facilities, and/or Class I railway operations.
  • Experience working as an LPG rail loader/off loader considered an asset.
  • Experience providing coaching, mentoring, training, and competency assessments within rail operations.
  • Experience working across multiple operating sites considered an asset.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Rail-industry technical certifications are considered an asset.
  • Valid driver's license; travel to operating sites is required.
  • Current or previous Track Inspection Level 2 certification considered an asset.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong practical understanding of industrial rail operations, including rail yard layouts, rail movements, and switching (shunting) practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of CROR and/or IROR rules.
  • Solid understanding of Class I railway standards and expectations as they apply to industrial railway facilities.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and communicate rail-related risks.
  • Effective communicator, able to engage with operations, facility leadership, railway partners, and other stakeholders through both oral and written communication.
  • Comfortable working as an independent technical specialist, managing multiple priorities with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and provide technical guidance and support to less experienced personnel.
  • Strong safety-oriented mindset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, collaboration, and supporting departmental objectives across multiple operating locations.

Travel Requirements: This role requires frequent travel to AltaGas operating facilities throughout North America and involves a combination of air travel and driving. The majority of the role is field-based, supporting operations directly at site locations.
