General Description

The Program Director for Word & Deed will provide strategic leadership and day-to-day oversight for the development, implementation, and evaluation of Urban Strategies’ Word & Deed program. Word & Deed equips pastoral leaders to explore and practice dialogical preaching and Gospel-driven action, connecting proclamation of the Gospel with authentic relationship and community development.

The Program Director will be accountable for the overall health, quality, and effectiveness of the program, including program strategy and development, recruitment and engagement of participants and coaches, program coordination, budgets, curriculum and resource development, mini-grant processes, evaluation, and grant deliverables. The Program Director will work closely with Urban Strategies staff, contracted facilitators and subject matter experts, participating congregations, pastoral leaders, and other partners to ensure effective program implementation.

About You

This position requires a relational and proactive leader who is passionate about Latino/a pastoral leadership, Christian Community Development, and helping churches faithfully engage and serve their communities. The ideal candidate will bring experience working with faith-based organizations and pastoral leaders, an understanding of Latino/a church contexts, and the ability to build authentic relationships while translating those relationships into effective program strategy, implementation, and outcomes. The candidate should be able to facilitate learning experiences and provide accompaniment and coaching in ways that are relational, participatory, culturally attuned, and theologically grounded.

The ideal candidate will also bring strong organizational, project management, communication, and leadership skills and be comfortable working collaboratively across organizational and institutional boundaries. They will be able to hold both the relational and organizational dimensions of leadership, building trust and credibility with pastoral leaders and congregations while maintaining the clarity, structure, and follow-through needed to lead a multi-phase initiative. The Program Director will be comfortable working through others, bringing together staff, facilitators, consultants, and partners around shared goals, and navigating the program from development through implementation and long-term sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Divinity, Ministry, Social Area, Administration, Education, etc.)  
  • Experience working directly with faith-based organizations, pastoral leaders, or diverse denominations for more than 5 years.
  • Experience in program coordination, program management, community development, leadership development, or a related field
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities 
  • Bilingual (Fluent English/Spanish) 
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Proficiency in project management 
  • Proficiency in technology systems 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Divinity, Ministry, Social Area, Education, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 7 years of experience in program leadership.

What You’ll Be Doing

Work closely with program team in the following: 

  • Program Leadership and Development:
    • Provide strategic leadership and overall direction for the Word & Deed program.
    • Develop and maintain program goals, implementation plans, timelines, and priorities.
    • Translate the program model into effective systems, processes, and practices for implementation.
    • Continuously assess and refine the program model based on participant feedback, evaluation findings, emerging needs, and lessons learned.
    • Ensure program activities remain aligned with Urban Strategies’ mission, Christian Community Development principles, and the goals and expectations of program funders and partners.
    • Identify programmatic opportunities, challenges, and risks and develop strategies to address them.
    • Serve as the primary internal owner and point of accountability for the successful implementation and outcomes of Word & Deed.
  • Participant Recruitment and Engagement: 
    • Lead the recruitment and selection of Word & Deed participants in collaboration with Urban Strategies staff and established program criteria.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with prospective and participating pastoral leaders and congregations.
    • Provide ongoing support, accompaniment, and guidance to participants throughout the program.
    • Maintain consistent communication with participants regarding program expectations, activities, resources, and opportunities.
  • Cohort Learning and Facilitation
    • Lead and/or facilitate Word & Deed cohort learning experiences, as appropriate.
    • Coordinate contracted facilitators, subject matter experts, and other contributors to ensure high-quality learning experiences.
    • Work with facilitators and subject matter experts to develop and refine curriculum, workbooks, discussion guides, and other resources for participants.
    • Ensure learning experiences appropriately address dialogical preaching, adult learning, and Christian Community Development.
  • Team Leadership and Coordination
    • Oversee program coordination.
    • Coordinate a team of contracted facilitators, coaches, consultants, and subject matter experts to support program development and implementation.
    • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, timelines, and expectations for staff and/or contracted contributors.
  • Logistics and Operations: 
    • Oversee logistics for cohort sessions, program events, and program grants. 
    • Maintain accurate program documentation and records. 
    • Maintain program budget and track expenses. 
    • Ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations. 
  • Program Communication: 
    • Develop and maintain clear and timely communication with participants, congregations, facilitators, partners, and internal stakeholders.
    • Work with Urban Strategies communications staff to develop program stories, participant highlights, outcomes, and other content that communicates the impact of Word & Deed.
    • Ensure internal stakeholders have appropriate visibility into program progress, successes, challenges, and needs.
    • Support the dissemination of program learning and outcomes through presentations, written resources, conferences, and other appropriate channels.
  • Grant Management and Sustainability:
    • Ensure grant reporting to foundation(s) and/or other relevant stakeholders.
    • Contribute programmatic expertise to Urban Strategies’ strategic fundraising efforts for Word & Deed.
    • Provide information, stories, outcomes, and program materials needed for grant proposals, donor communications, and funder engagement.
    • Participate in funder and donor conversations as appropriate.
    • Develop and maintain a sustainability strategy for Word & Deed in collaboration with organizational leadership and program partners.
