Gila Agreements Project Coordinator

Status: Full Time, Salaried

Location: Within an hour and a half of Silver City or Truth or Consequences, New Mexico 

Reports to: Southern New Mexico Project Manager 

Supervisors: May supervise seasonal or part-time field crews

Key Relationships: Restoration Specialists, Geo-spatial team, Restoration Technicians 

Salary: $55,000-65,000 annually + benefits

Anticipated Start Date: November 2026. 

The Project Coordinator will support restoration efforts in the 2022 Black Fire scar located within the Gila National Forest. Their work focus will be post-fire recovery efforts within the 325,000-acre Black Fire scar and adjacent impacted areas of Gila National Forest. This position is remote/work from home and will require travel to field sites and partner meetings. Remote work requires reliable internet access. Work may require overnight camping in front and backcountry settings, potentially for extended periods. 

Primary Responsibilities and Expectations

The Gila Agreements Project Coordinator reports to the Southern New Mexico Project Manager and works closely with other members of the Habitat Protection and Restoration program to support planning, development, and implementation of Black Fire recovery priority projects. A majority of the planning area is within the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. 

This position is grant-funded until June 2028. Additional project funds may extend the position well beyond 2028, but applicants should not assume this is a permanent position. 

This position is ideal for a restoration practitioner, biologist, hydrologist, Wilderness professional, or conservationist with interest and experience in planning and/or implementing watershed restoration and natural resource improvement projects. 

Position Description:

The Project Coordinator will:

• Assist in identifying, planning, and implementing watershed restoration, wildlife waters, conservation, and land use projects.
• Conduct ongoing communication internally and with partners on the status of project planning, implementation, and project successes.
• Provided logistical support for field crews, front and backcountry

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Experience

• Undergraduate degree in ecological restoration, natural resource management, wildlife biology, biology, forestry, botany, hydrology, engineering or related field or four (4) years of relevant work experience in conservation, ecological restoration or natural resources. 
• A minimum of one (1) year of professional experience with proven results in project management, planning or oversight related to construction, range management, watershed restoration, wildlife habitat or related disciplines. 
• A strong knowledge of and experience in Federal land management policies, procedures, and regulations. Specifically with regards to work in designated Wilderness areas. 

• Ability to work, communicate, and ask for support effectively with all levels of staff, government agencies, landowners, and other partners.

• Ability to work and hike in remote post-fire landscapes with accompanying gear. Applicants should be comfortable hiking up to 12 miles in a post-fire landscape with personal gear and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Required Abilities and Skills

• Ability to work independently, perform fieldwork, and manage projects with minimal oversight.
• Capable of actively working to ensure a supportive and safe environment for any direct reports and address issues promptly and professionally with colleagues and appropriate leadership. 
• A strong attention to detail and skill working in a timely and well-organized fashion.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.
• A valid U.S. Driver’s License.

Preferred Knowledge/Experience

• Proficiency with GIS and managing geospatial data, including shapefiles, geodatabases, and KML/KMZ. 
• Experience with apps such as Survey 123, Field Maps, Avenza and OnX for collecting data and/or navigation 
• Experience writing contracts and specifications. 
• Knowledge of bat biology, ecology, ecological restoration, and broad conservation and wildlife management principles.
• Experience with planning or implementing LTPBR projects.
• Understanding of Wilderness ethics at a crew and project level.
• Experience with preparing agency/compliance documents such as MRAs, EAs, CEs, and hitch plans.
• Current WFR certification.
• Experience providing planning and logistical support for Wilderness and/or backcountry projects.

Compensation and Benefits

• $55,000-$65,000 annually, full-time salaried. Paid biweekly electronically or via check.
