Computer Software / SaaS

A lot of companies say they’re “mission-driven.” Our unique corporate structure guarantees that every decision we make upholds our mission: to ensure the internet remains open and accessible. Beholden to neither shareholders nor investors, Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the not-for-profit Mozilla Foundation. Along with our communities of 20,000+ contributors and collaborators, Mozilla Corporation’s staff designs, builds, and distributes software that allows people to enjoy the internet on their own terms. Our flagship product — the Firefox browser — has expanded into a family of products that protects users and alerts them of risks, safeguards passwords and provides a secure VPN (with more to come). By maintaining a safe, open internet we're helping humanity, while also helping the individual humans employed here to reach their personal and professional goals. With a relatively small team serving hundreds of millions of people, a culture of exploration, and a commitment to mentorship, opportunities abound to learn and grow at Mozilla.

Job description

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people.

The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.

About this team and role:

Mozilla’s Data Engineering team is looking for a Senior Staff Data Engineer / Data Platform Engineer to help build the present and future of our Data Platform infrastructure.  This role will be a hybrid Data Engineer / Data Platform Engineer, working across both teams (Data Platform Engineering and Data Engineering) in a technical leadership capacity.

Mozilla’s Data Platform serves the needs of multiple products, including the Firefox browser, from data collection through to insights, product experiences, and machine learning applications.

Our goal is to build a robust, efficient, and effective platform that makes it increasingly easy to inform Mozilla’s business and product decisions. For more details, please take a look at the overview or the Data@Mozilla blog.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, build, and improve systems to reliably and efficiently process data at the scale of tens of terabytes per day, and apply those systems to solve meaningful problems for the business.
  • Evaluate new technologies.  Work with Data Engineering and Data Platform Engineering not only to implement these technologies but also to set best-practice standards.
  • Craft and improve workflows in GCP using standard, modern components such as Dataflow, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, GKE, and Airflow.
  • Drive cross-functional projects with stakeholders across Mozilla, including Data Science, Product, Legal, Policy, and Engineering.
  • Mentor teammates and develop engineering best practices across the Data Organization.
  • Work with Data Science to design and implement useful data abstractions.
  • Address the evolving needs of active Data Products.

What you’ll bring:

  • 10+ years of combined experience in Data Engineering, Data Platform Engineering, Data Science, or Data Analyst roles
  • Deep expertise in Data Engineering and Data Platform Engineering.
  • Experience with data tooling in GCP, AWS, or Azure, including Pub/Sub, BigQuery, and Dataflow (Apache Beam), or similar technologies.
  • Experience with Looker, Fivetran, Kubernetes / GKE, Airflow / Cloud Composer, and Terraform, or similar technologies.
  • Advanced coding skills in SQL and Python.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: modularity, abstraction, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Experience as a tech lead, team lead, hands-on Data Engineering or Data Platform manager, or similar leadership role.
  • Commitment to our values:
    • Welcoming differences
    • Being relationship-minded
    • Practicing responsible participation
    • Having grit

What you’ll get:

  • Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team
  • Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute)
  • Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together
  • Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday
  • One-time home office stipend
  • Annual professional development budget
  • Quarterly well-being stipend
