Job description

Job Title: Senior Product Designer

Salary: £50,000 - £60,000

About IMP

At IMP we help Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) take control of their finances. Our MAT-first software is built by people who know the sector inside out. Former trust professionals, finance experts and product specialists are all part of our team. More than half of all MATs in the UK already use IMP to plan with confidence, simplify complex processes and make smarter decisions.

We’re proud to be independent, founder-led and growing fast. Alongside our award-winning products, we’ve built a culture we’re equally proud of. We are ranked as one of the UK’s Top 25 Great Places to Work for mid-sized companies. Respect, collaboration and personal growth sit at the heart of how we work. You’ll find flexibility, support and opportunities to develop here, alongside regular team socials and funded CPD.

The role

We’re looking for a Product Designer to support our product squads and help grow our design operations.

You’ll be the only designer in the squads you support, taking prioritised requirements through divergent concepts, testing, iteration and convergence to something shipped and working in front of real finance teams - and you’ll stay with it through build. You’ll set the pace, make the calls, and bring engineering and product with you.

You will be one of two designers at IMP, working directly with our Head of Product Design. That is a deliberately small function: high autonomy, a short line to every decision, and nothing between you and the work. You will not be managing anyone.

Why this role is unusual

IMP is entering one of the most ambitious periods of product work in its history - the kind that comes round once in a company’s life, and rarely at one small enough that a single designer can leave fingerprints all over it.

To set us up for this transition, we’re re-writing our design playbook and using it to influence the design of our established and next-generation greenfield products. It’s the design platform we always dreamed about building: prioritising human creativity, exploiting AI tooling to help with drudgery and knowledge plumbing, and supercharging our output quality so we punch above our weight. You’ll be helping to shape all this. A couple of notable areas we’ve been developing recently:

  • IMPDesign.one - our unified design system, spanning every product in the suite, generated and maintained by AI, human in the loop at every critical point.

  • IMPDesign.skills - A suite of AI-powered design skills built to remove the least interesting parts of the job - while leaving the thinking, the judgement and the craft entirely ours.

  • IMPInsight - A new insight platform for managing user feedback, allowing us to better understand our users’ needs, better test our assumptions and spend more time interpreting and using evidence in our craft.

That combination is rare: design work that reshapes software already critically relied on by real finance teams, building next-gen design operations at the forefront of the industry and working on greenfield concepts that grow our product suite.

And we strongly believe we’ve found the right balance between human creativity and AI tooling support – so if you’ve been using or experimenting with generative AI in your own practice and want somewhere that will fund it, take it seriously and let you push it further, this is unusually good ground.

What you'll own

No surprises here, but just to be explicit: your squads’ Product Owners run the discovery research that decides which user needs we address and in what order. From the point those prioritised requirements land, the design is yours:

  • Concept generation. Diverge first. Turn requirements into multiple concept variants that open the problem up and get teams thinking.

  • Usability testing. Test concepts with real users and our in-house domain experts - colleagues who have run MAT finance first-hand.

  • Collecting feedback + iterating. Fold the feedback back in, and support the squad in landing on a final solution everyone understands and you can defend.

  • Stay with it through build. Support the team through story breakdown and technical refinement, so what ships is what was agreed.

But you won’t be on your own:

  • Domain experts on-hand: You’ll be supported by stupendously knowledgeable product owners and product specialists helping you get the domain knowledge nailed.

  • Peer review, No donuts - You’ll be able to bounce ideas off and do peer reviews with the head of design (who designs our other products). And you’ll be working in a team of people who literally embody our company principle of “Don’t be a donut” who will treat you with respect and dignity and expect the same in return.

  • Regular planning, coaching and mentoring – You’ll be expected to manage your own work, but we have two dedicated sessions every week: one at the beginning to help plan your week, and one at the end to focus on you, your wellbeing and helping with any coaching and mentoring you’d like support with.

What we need from you

Essential

  • You've been the design lead on a squad or team - the only designer in the room, making the call. You can walk us through a real piece of work from requirement to shipped software and show us your decisions along the way.

  • You're a self-starter. Remote, embedded, sole designer: nobody is going to sequence your week for you.

  • You use generative AI in your design practice, or you've been actively exploring it. We don’t need you to be an expert - we need real curiosity and evidence you have tried things. You aren’t afraid to dabble in the Terminal. You’re experimental. Come ready to show us what you have built, broken or learned.

  • You design well for complex, data-dense products, and you write clearly enough that a remote team can follow your reasoning without a meeting.

  • A portfolio that shows your thinking and your process, not just the final screens.

Nice to have

  • Experience with accounting, finance or budgeting software.

  • B2B SaaS experience, particularly where users are professionals doing serious work under time pressure.

  • Experience designing interfaces on top of AI output - review states, confidence, correction, human-in-the-loop.

  • Experience designing across a multi-product platform or suite, rather than a single application.

  • Public-sector, education or otherwise regulated-domain experience.

Benefits:

  • 27 days of holiday per year plus bank holidays (with a buy option up to an additional 5 days)

  • Enhance Maternity and Paternity leave

  • AXA Health insurance including dental, optical and mental health

  • Broadband allowance

  • Home office stipend

  • Life assurance (4 x basic salary)

  • Encouraged and funded CPD
