Position Overview

In coordination with Chief Underwriter and VP, Technical Underwriting to lead, manage, and direct the development and compliance of financial and medical underwriting standards, and policies and procedures that drive USIM's philosophy and sound approach to underwriting.  Underwrites large risk facultative cases and manages client relationships to ensure client's needs are met while ensuring profitable underwriting decisions and maintaining USIM's philosophy.  Ensures department alignment and coordination with all other areas of the company to achieve corporate business strategies and vision.  Serves as a key member of the US Facultative leadership team, providing strategic direction and fostering a spirit of cooperation and coordination among all work areas.

Responsibilities

  • Appraises and underwrites USIM’s largest risks for life insurance with unlimited approval authority.  Exercises full authority to make exceptions to guidelines and rules to ensure preserving of client relationships while maintaining RGA Re philosophy and profitable business.  Overarching goal is to ensure profitable and sustainable relationships with clients.
  • Develops and manages client relationships by providing expert underwriting solutions to clients through partnering with them to identify unique, creative ways to solve their problems, improve their business results and by effectively communicating, negotiating and selling underwriting decisions which result in strong business relationships. Through intelligence gathering, communicates underwriting information and trends to clients.
  • Acts as USIM’s primary contact for retro companies and maintains USIM’s reputation in the auto and facultative pool arrangements.
  • Reviews, co-signs and/or gives second opinion on COLI/BOLI underwriting and mentors, educates and trains underwriters in COLI/BOLI and financial underwriting.
  • Leads the Large Case Unit (LCU) performing management responsibilities and provision of development and rotational opportunities for team members. Further develops talent outside of the immediate team, to foster talent succession for the LCU team. Provides leadership and underwriting expertise to management, team members, actuarial, business development and external clients and as requested outside the division.
  • Ensures that there is adequate underwriting support for large case review and provides training opportunities in large case review for less experienced underwriters.
  • Performs selected facultative case claims analysis and review and supports audits. Reviews potential jumbo violations on inforce cases and works collaboratively with clients, retrocessionaires, and internal stakeholders (Claims, Actuarial, Business Development, Operations, etc.) to ensure appropriate resolution for all parties.
  • Represents RGA Re, as a leader in reinsurance underwriting, at industry meetings and exercises influence, as appropriate, with customers, competitors, retrocessionaires.
  • Fosters a positive and engaged work environment.  Mentors associates and gives guidance on associate development.
  • Serves as a member of the US Facultative Underwriting leadership team, including setting strategic and tactical direction, division goals and objectives including assessing/prioritizing client relationships, and development of joint plans to achieve goals and objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) or equivalent related work experience (minimum 8 years)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) BS/BA Science or Business is preferred
  • 15+ Years of reinsurance or direct underwriting experience
  • 20+ Years of reinsurance underwriting experience is preferred
  • ACS, ALU, FLMI, FALU, or CLU accreditation or progress towards accreditation is preferred
  • Intermediate Word, SQL/Query and Excel skills
  • Highly advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates.
  • Advanced knowledge of broad business practices
  • Highly advanced persuasion skills when working with internal partners and external customers to resolve issues/problems.
  • Expertise in implementing change, ensuring understanding, participation and ownership.
  • Highly advanced investigative, analytical and problem solving skills utilizing experience, research, guidelines and internal resources.
  • Exceptional skills in managing multiple tasks, projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities and ability delegate key areas of responsibility.
  • Expertise in translating business needs and problems into viable and accepted solutions.
  • Expert ability to analyze and improve business processes
  • Highly advanced project management skills.  Demonstrates ability to evaluate project objectives and scope feasibility, gain understanding, schedule resources, and manage budget to plan.
  • Exceptional ability to make timely and effective decisions and produce results through strategic planning and the implementation and evaluation of programs and policies.

Compensation Range:

$150,770.00 - $224,640.00 Annual

Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
