Backend Engineer - Cards & Digital Wallets

Become a vital contributor to our Cards & Wallets Segment within the Everyday Banking Domain. We are dedicated to providing a secure, seamless, and globally scalable card experience.

Based in our Berlin hub, you will join a mature, high-stakes environment focused on mission-critical transaction processing. As a Backend Software Engineer, you will play an essential role in your team’s delivery, working independently to increase your scope and sphere of impact.

We are seeking a proficient Backend Engineer to refine our products using a modern microservice architecture built on Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot. You will be expected to maintain fluent knowledge of the codebase and act as a key contributor to technical documentation and product discovery.

Our cross-functional teams prioritize collaboration and knowledge sharing. You will have the autonomy to solve complex problems while helping to improve team processes, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior engineers.

In this role, you will:

• Design, build, and deploy high-quality software solutions using Kotlin, Java, and Spring Boot within a microservice architecture.

• Own the full software lifecycle, including production monitoring, incident resolution, and continuous performance optimization.

• Contribute actively to technical documentation, RFCs, and product discovery, ensuring codebase quality and clarity.

• Partner with cross-functional teams to define backlog priorities and identify opportunities for process and workflow improvements.

• Support team growth by onboarding new engineers, conducting thorough code reviews, and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.

• Operate with professional autonomy, delivering complex tasks while maintaining high engineering standards.

What you need to be successful:

Technical Skills:

• Proven experience in backend engineering, with deep proficiency in Java or Kotlin and modern microservice patterns.

• Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL databases (Postgres preferred) and cloud-native infrastructure, specifically AWS.

• Demonstrated ability to handle the entire deployment process, including bug fixing and production monitoring.
