Job description

Come and push your journey to the next level!

A taste of what you’ll do
The Middle Backend Developer builds and maintains the backend services that integrate third-party game providers into the platform. The role covers the technical lifecycle of an integration — from provider specification through implementation to production support — and owns the reliability of the services handling game launches, bet and win transactions and provider callbacks. It suits a developer comfortable working against external specifications and third-party systems they don't control.

  • Implement and maintain integrations with third-party game providers in PHP/Laravel, working from provider API specifications and integration documents
  • Handle game transaction flows — launch, bet, win, rollback, reconciliation
  • Design and optimise database schemas and queries in database
  • Investigate and resolve integration issues with providers, including direct technical liaison with their engineering contacts
  • Investigate and resolve production incidents affecting game availability or player transactions, including participation in the on-call rota
  • Write and maintain automated tests, including coverage of provider edge cases and failure modes
  • Participate in code review, sprint planning, refinement and retrospectives
  • Keep integration documentation current, including provider-specific behaviour and known quirks
  • Apply secure development practices and comply with regulatory, licensing and data protection requirements
  • Support and mentor junior developers on the team
  • Any other task/responsibility which may be related and/or connected to your role as Middle Backend Developer

Who and what we are after?

  • Minimum 3 years' commercial PHP development experience
  • Basic working knowledge of Python
  • Strong Laravel experience, including Eloquent, queues, service container and Artisan tooling
  • Comfortable working in an older procedural PHP codebase alongside modern framework code, and migrating between the two
  • Practical experience integrating third-party REST APIs, including handling authentication, retries, timeouts and inconsistent provider behaviour
  • Competent with relational databases: schema design, indexing, query optimisation
  • Understanding of transactional integrity, concurrency and idempotency in financial or wallet-style operations
  • Experience with RabbitMQ or a comparable message broker — consumers, queue configuration, handling stuck or piling messages
  • Redis for caching and pub/sub
  • Experience with Git, branching workflows and CI/CD pipelines
  • Automated testing with PHPUnit; familiarity with static analysis and style tooling (PHPStan, PHPMD, Laravel Pint)
  • Docker, and basic familiarity with Kubernetes for local development
  • Able to debug production issues across service boundaries and identify whether a fault is ours or the provider's
  • Clear written and spoken English, sufficient for direct correspondence with external provider teams
  • Able to work independently on assigned scope while escalating blockers early
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent practical experience
