Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for UK-based lawyers with substantive expertise in international arbitration, cross-border disputes, award enforcement, sanctions, export controls, and emergency interim relief.

This role involves reviewing realistic international disputes matters and comparing multiple blinded legal work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and practical usefulness. Selected lawyers will provide structured preference decisions and concise written reasoning grounded in their professional disputes and arbitration experience.

Key Responsibilities

International Arbitration

  • Review matters involving international commercial arbitration
  • Assess legal reasoning, procedural analysis, and strategic recommendations
  • Evaluate whether arguments and conclusions appropriately reflect the underlying documents
  • Identify substantive errors, omissions, or unsupported positions
  • Apply practical judgement grounded in international arbitration practice

Award Enforcement

  • Review matters involving recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards
  • Assess enforcement strategy, procedural requirements, and potential obstacles
  • Evaluate competing legal approaches and practical considerations
  • Identify incomplete or inaccurate analysis
  • Judge whether recommendations would be useful in actual disputes practice

Cross-Border Disputes

  • Evaluate complex disputes involving multiple jurisdictions
  • Review jurisdictional, procedural, and strategic considerations
  • Assess the strength and practicality of proposed legal approaches
  • Identify issues that may affect enforcement, remedies, or case strategy
  • Apply substantive cross-border disputes experience to each review

Sanctions & Export Controls

  • Review matters involving sanctions and export-control considerations
  • Assess whether applicable restrictions have been properly identified and analysed
  • Evaluate the interaction between regulatory requirements and dispute strategy
  • Identify material omissions or unsupported conclusions
  • Apply current practitioner judgement to cross-border regulatory issues

Emergency & Interim Relief

  • Evaluate matters involving emergency measures and interim relief
  • Review procedural options, strategic considerations, and available remedies
  • Assess whether proposed approaches appropriately reflect urgency and enforcement considerations
  • Identify weaknesses in legal reasoning or execution strategy
  • Evaluate the practical effectiveness of proposed recommendations

Blinded Legal Work Product Comparison

  • Read a synthetic legal matter and its underlying documents
  • Review six blinded legal deliverables, labelled A–F
  • Complete five head-to-head comparisons against a common comparator output
  • Evaluate each work product holistically rather than focusing on minor drafting differences
  • Select the stronger response based on substantive legal quality

Legal Quality Evaluation

  • Assess work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and usefulness
  • Identify material legal errors or omissions
  • Evaluate whether reasoning is coherent and adequately supported
  • Assess whether recommendations would be useful to practising disputes lawyers
  • Distinguish substantive quality differences from stylistic preferences

Written Legal Reasoning

  • Provide a short, specific rationale for every preference decision
  • Explain the legal and practical considerations supporting each judgement
  • Reference relevant strengths, weaknesses, or omissions
  • Maintain precise and professional written English
  • Follow project instructions and evaluation criteria consistently

Ideal Profile

  • Qualified lawyer based in the United Kingdom
  • Substantive professional experience in international arbitration and cross-border disputes
  • Strong experience in one or more of the following:
    • International arbitration
    • Arbitral award enforcement
    • Cross-border disputes
    • Sanctions and export controls
    • Emergency or interim relief
  • Able to evaluate legal work holistically for correctness, completeness, judgement, and practical usefulness
  • Strong legal analytical skills
  • Precise written English
  • Comfortable comparing competing legal approaches and explaining preference decisions
  • Able to work independently against detailed written instructions and deadlines
