Job description

Overview:

Kick off your cybersecurity journey working with real-world systems and compliance frameworks.

Join our team as a Cyber Intern and support ongoing cybersecurity initiatives that strengthen our IT infrastructure and compliance posture. This role is ideal for students pursuing degrees in IT, Cybersecurity, or related fields at a Virginia state institution. The intern will gain hands-on experience working with federal contracting environments, industry compliance frameworks, and enterprise-level security systems.

**Please note, only actively enrolled students in a Virginia state institution will be considered. This internship is only available for upperclassmen. **

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This is a part time remote internship, and you will work a schedule that is agreed upon with your manager. The maximum number of hours is 125. This program is funded through the Virginia Experiential Learning Grant from the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI); and you will be paid through this program. 

Responsibilities:

Key Projects & Responsibilities 

  • Automation: Assist in IT automation processes. 
  • Supporting documentation of security practices and procedures. 
  • Reviewing, implementing, and validating automation processes. 
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Implementation: Contribute to the design, testing, and rollout of a virtual desktop environment to reduce reliance on physical laptops. Activities may include research, configuration, and documenting best practices for secure remote access. 
  • Security Audits & Vulnerability Analysis
  • Conduct audits of tenant security configurations. 
  • Identify gaps and potential vulnerabilities within systems. 
  • Draft recommendations for remediation, including patching strategies and system hardening measures. 
  • General Cybersecurity Support: Collaborate with senior IT and cybersecurity staff to support day-to-day monitoring, compliance reporting, and risk management efforts. 
Qualifications:

Requirements 

  • Education
  • Currently enrolled at a Virginia state college or university. 
  • Major in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field. 
  • Preference given to candidates pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity. 
  • Skills & Knowledge
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Azure, or similar enterprise platforms. 
  • Understanding of basic cybersecurity principles and frameworks. 
  • Strong research, documentation, and technical writing abilities. 
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail. 
  • Other Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship (if required for access to certain systems or data). 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
