Genetic Counselor – Remote

Department of Veterans Affairs – Genomic Medicine Program
This Position Is Contingent Upon Bid Award

Work Location

Fully Remote – United States

  • Type of Employment: Full-Time Contractor Position with W-2 employment through Fidelity Partners.
  • Work Arrangement: Fully Remote / Telehealth.
  • Estimated Compensation: $46.54 per hour.
  • Period of Performance: September 28, 2026 through September 27, 2031, including option periods.
  • Work Schedule: Generally Monday through Friday during regular VA clinic hours, approximately 8:00 AM–4:30 PM in the local time zone of the supported VA facility.
  • On-Call Requirement: None.
  • Government-Furnished Equipment: VA will provide a laptop, docking station, two monitors, camera, and PIV reader, along with required VA system access.
  • Employee Requirement: Must maintain a private, VA-compliant workspace and reliable internet connection.

Summary of Duties

The Genetic Counselor will provide independent genetic counseling services to Veterans and their families through virtual care. Services include medical and family history review, genetic risk assessment, patient education, development of testing strategies, coordination of genetic testing, interpretation and communication of results, and documentation within VA electronic health record systems.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a current, full, and unrestricted professional license where required.
  • In jurisdictions without genetic counselor licensure, must practice under the applicable arrangement identified by the VA.
  • Must meet applicable ABGC board certification or eligibility requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or equivalent.
  • Must possess or obtain an appropriate NPI.
  • Must maintain required continuing education.
  • Must meet VA credentialing, training, health-screening, privacy, and information-security requirements.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with electronic health records, telehealth technology, and computer applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive genetic counseling through telehealth.
  • Review medical records and relevant scientific or clinical literature.
  • Obtain detailed personal, medical, lifestyle, environmental, and family histories.
  • Perform hereditary and genetic risk assessments.
  • Educate patients and families regarding inheritance patterns, recurrence risks, testing options, and prevention strategies.
  • Identify appropriate genetic testing strategies.
  • Coordinate and order genetic testing when authorized.
  • Review and interpret genetic test results.
  • Communicate results and their implications to patients and healthcare providers.
  • Assist patients and families with adaptation to genetic risks or diagnoses.
  • Identify applicable VHA services and resources.
  • Maintain accurate documentation within VA electronic health records.
  • Communicate with VA physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient care.
  • Support genetics-related education and outreach initiatives.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with VA privacy and information-security requirements.
