Job description

Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel conducts research in the fields of energy economics and energy system technology, focusing on: energy informatics, energy meteorology and geographic information systems, energy economics and system design, energy process engineering and storage, network planning and operation, grid stability and converter technology, as well as thermal energy technology. Around 450 scientists, employees, and students develop solutions for the energy transition and generate around EUR 38 million in revenue per year.

Would you like to help shape the implementation of the energy transition and work at the interface between science and industry?

Research Group: Grid Control and Grid Dynamics

The dynamic behavior of power systems with high shares of inverter-based resources (IBRs) is strongly influenced by converter controls and their interaction with the surrounding network. These interactions can give rise to oscillatory modes, adverse coupling between devices, and stability limitations that depend on both converter characteristics and system conditions. The Grid Control and Grid Dynamics research group at Fraunhofer IEE investigates these phenomena using analytical methods, numerical simulations, and models at different levels of complexity.

Be part of change

  • Investigation of stability in inverter-based resources and detection/mitigation of oscillatory phenomena
  • Fundamental stability investigations using simplified test systems, such as a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system
  • Identification of mechanisms leading to poorly damped or unstable oscillations
  • Comparison and validation of models and simulation results using different power-system simulation tools
  • Extension of fundamental findings to larger and more complex power-system networks
  • Investigation of methods for detecting, characterizing, and mitigating oscillations, as well as analyzing control parameters

What you contribute

  • Pursuing a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, power systems, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of power-system dynamics, stability, and inverter-based resources
  • Experience or familiarity with DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, PowerDynamics.jl, or Python
  • Analytical and structured approach to solving technical problems, with the motivation to work independently
  • Good English language skills, both written and spoken

What we offer

  • Insight into application-oriented research in the energy sector with direct relevance to industry and society
  • Access to expert networks in energy economics and research
  • Commitment to the Diversity Charter – We actively promote diversity and inclusion in all areas
  • Option for continued employment (e.g., as a student research assistant or for a PhD)
  • Flexible and individual adaptation of working hours to lecture and exam periods, as well as the option to work from home or in a modern institute building with a 'New Work' concept in a central location

Within the framework of the Master's thesis, there is also the possibility of working as a student research assistant with a suitable number of hours (40 to 80 hours). The position is initially limited to 12 months, with the aim of a long-term collaboration. Exceptions for a shorter duration are fundamental operational reasons, the personal wish of the student, or the end of studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
